Adelaide Strikers Women are coming off a commanding 8-wicket win against the strong Perth Scorchers and would hence be high on confidence. With Sophie Devine, who has been adjudged the Player of the Tournament, in prime form, Adelaide will be coming hard at Brisbane. The leading run-getter of the season so far, Devine has already amassed 764 runs in the season and scored a superb unbeaten 65 in the semis. Adelaide also has three other dependable batters in the unit - Bridget Patterson (307), Tahlia McGrath (298 runs) and captain Suzie Bates (293 runs). These 4 combined give Adelaide a very robust batting order and they would be posing a serious challenge to Brisbane’s bowling.
Adelaide’s bowling looks in good shape too. Megan Schutt (15 wickets), Sophie Devine (18 wickets), Tahlia McGrath (12 wickets), Amanda Wellington (16 wickets), and Sarah Coyte (18 wickets) give the team an all-round, solid and performing bowling department. It certainly won’t be easy for Brisbane to take them on.
With the second-highest leading run-getter of the league, Beth Mooney, as their opener, Brisbane Heat Women will be confident of their batting unit going into the final. Mooney has 687 runs in the season so far and would be looking to finish with a flourish to become the second batter in the season to cross 700 runs. Jess Jonassen (386 runs) and Maddy Green (298) runs have been the other two leading scorers for the team. Brisbane’s batting has revolved around these three and the team would count on them to deliver in the final game. Grace Harris is also looking in good touch and may have an impact on the game. Fortunately, captain Kirby Short’s horrible season with the bat hasn’t affected the team’s performance.
Brisbane’s bowling has been very good too with 3 bowlers having already taken 15-plus wickets. Jess Jonassen has been the superstar for the team with 20 wickets. Delissa Kimmince (17 wickets) and Sammy-Jo Johnson (17 wickets) have been regular wicket-takers as well. With leg-spinner Amelia Kerr (13 wickets) doing an economical job consistently, Brisbane’s bowling thus is one of the best in the season. These 4 together will be posing a tough challenge for Adelaide in the final
The pitch at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane is a really good surface that will benefit the batters but the seam bowlers will get some help too. In the semi-final that was played here, both the teams scored 160-plus runs. Brisbane, in fact, chased down the target of 164 in 18 overs. Hence, expect another good batting deck and a high-scoring contest.
The weather for the game is expected to be bright and sunny and we should get a full 40-over game.
The Allan Border Field in Brisbane has proved to be a good ground for chasing in this season of the WBBL. Of the 7 games played here this season, 6 have been won by the team batting second. Hence, the team batting second will certainly have an advantage here in the final. A total of 170-180 is expected to be scored by the team batting first. But given how things have gone this season, that target too might be chased down on this ground.
Batting second has worked well for both the teams this season and both of them would be looking to bat second after winning the toss in the final. They have got good bowling units and would be confident of restricting the opposition and chasing down the target.
This is a very tough game to call as both the teams have been the best this season and both of them ended with the exact number of points at the end of the league stage. In the last 5 games between the Brisbane Heat Women and Adelaide Strikers Women, Brisbane has won 3 games.
Adelaide Strikers Women have been really good all season and have the best all-rounder of the season, Sophie Devine, in their ranks.
However, Brisbane has a very strong batting and bowling outfit. While both teams have almost equal strengths, Brisbane looks just a little more polished unit and will have that slight edge since they are playing at home.
This is bound to be a very close contest. Two equally-matched topsides are fighting it out in the final. But we back the Brisbane Heat Women to be the winners of the final of WBBL 2019-20. They just look to be in a zone and too determined to defend their crown.
