Afghanistan will take on Sri Lanka in the Seventh fixture of ICC cricket world cup 2019 at Sofia Garden, Cardiff on Tuesday.

Afghanistan showed some fight in their first game against strong opponent Australia, but they lost the game by 7 wickets. However, they have beaten Pakistan in a World Cup warm-up match. Afghanistan batting is heavily dependent on their top three batsmen Mohammad Shahzad(w), Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmat Shah. Also, they have got some of the best bowlers like Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi. Star spinner Rashid Khan carries the team's hopes on his shoulders with his ability to run through opposition batting. He lies third in the 50-over ODI bowling ranking. Afghanistan will be looking for some clinical performance and hoping to get the momentum back in their favour.

On the contrary, Sri Lanka looks the most unfledged side in this edition of the World Cup. Their recent performances demonstrate their tendency to succumb under pressure. They have played very poor cricket in the first game; lost to dominant New Zealand side by 10 wickets. Newly appointed captain Dimuth Karunaratne scored 52 in last game but his team was bundled out for 136. The other top order batsman Kushan Mendis and Kushal Perera need to stand up and play a huge innings to help their team post a decent total on board.  Angelo Mathews and Malinga are the most experienced player in the current Sri Lankan side and they need to step up and produce some match-winning contribution.

Afghanistan

Though Afghanistan side only playing their second 50-over World Cup, they have played some very quality cricket in recent times and also beat the strong opponent on a few occasions. Top order batsman Mohammad Shahzad(w) and Hazratullah Zazai were amongst the leading scorer for the side of late, but both got out on a duck in last game. Batting duo would be looking to provide some good start in the powerplay. They have match winners like Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi who can turn the game on their own and prove pivotal to their team's fortunes.

Mohammad Nabi is undoubtedly one of the best all-rounder’s in the world at the moment. With 2613 runs and 118 wickets to his name in 113 ODI matches. He can play powerful shots in the middle order and on top got the ability to deceive some best batsman in the world. In the last game, batsman N Zadran and Rahmat Shah played good knock, scored 51 and 43 respectively. Rashid Khan also played a quick inning of 27 runs in just 11 balls and picked one wicket.

Pace bowling unit will be lead by skipper Gulbadin Naib and Hamid Hassan. Gulbadin Naib claimed 22 wickets in last 14 innings. Spinner Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi offer useful variety. Rashid Khan picked 26 wickets in his last 15 appearances at an average of 20.16.

Afghanistan Predicted Playing XI

Mohammad Shahzad(w), Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib(c), Rashid Khan, Dawlat Zadran, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Hamid Hassan

Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan team have many things to address in this game. They need to put up a more intense fight with the bat and ball. However, much like their opponent, they will be heavily reliant on their key players - Dimuth Karunaratne, Thisara Perera and Angelo Mathews. There is good enough young talent like Kushal Mendis and Kusal Perera who can also deliver top class batting performance.

Angelo Mathews possesses a good record against Afghanistan; he scored 111 runs at an average of 55 and picked three wickets in three matches. All-rounder Thisara Perera is in great form in the last year. He has scored 588 runs in last 21 innings at an average of 30.94 and also claimed 21 wickets in 19 innings. Lasith Malinga might not be at his vintage best anymore but he is still mighty effective, as one saw during the recent IPL.

Bowling wise, the side will be reliant on the likes of Lasith Malinga and Suranga Lakmal to deliver breakthroughs with new-ball. Given Sri Lanka's thin resources, Malinga will have to bring all his experience to the fore and show the way. Nuwan Pradeep/ Isuru Udana will be the third seamer for this game.

Sri Lanka Predicted Playing XI

Thisara Perera, C, Kusal Perera, Dhananjaya de Silva, Jeevan Mendis, Kusal Mendis, Dimuth Karunaratne(c), Nuwan Pradeep/Isuru Udana, Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Thirimanne, Lasith Malinga

Pitch And Weather Conditions

On Tuesday, the sky in Cardiff stays cloudy but there's not much rain forecast during the course of the day. Sophia Gardens in Cardiff has witnessed high scoring games in international. The Pacers need to make use of their variations to get wickets on this surface. Sri Lanka has lost all their games played at this venue.

Toss Prediction

In the last 10 games, highest batting total at this place is 342 and the average score is 270. The records are in favour of the chasing team.  Overall 13 out of the last 19 ODIs were won by the team batting second. So, the team would be looking to win the toss and bowl first at this venue.

Winning Prediction

Both the team will be hoping for a win in this game and get some momentum. Sri Lanka has an impressive World Cup record, with one title, two runners-up finishes and one semi-final appearance. However, their recent form is not great. They got good experienced and young talented player but lack intensity. On the other hand, Afghanistan team are playing good cricket, and they also got a good quality spinner and all-rounders in the side.

We expect it to be a very good contest but Afghanistan will have an edge considering the recent form. We predict Afghanistan will win this match.
