West Indies will take on Afghanistan team in the 40th match of 2019 World Cup at the Headingley in Leeds. West Indies, who had thumped Pakistan by seven wickets in their World Cup opener, has now lost last six games in a row. They are left with only one game against Afghanistan and will aim to end their otherwise disappointing campaign on a high. Though they have been impressive in parts, the side has failed to hold on to their nerves in tight games and ended up enduring heartbreaking losses. In the previous game versus Sri Lanka, West Indies were pretty close in the chase but in the end, Windies felt short by just 23 runs. Nicholas Pooran smashed his maiden ODI century. It’s the third time West Indies came close to a big scalp in recent weeks, after also losing out narrowly to Australia and New Zealand. The major concern for Skipper Jason Holder is inconsistency in their batting and bowling, and that’s the major cause for their failure so far in the event. Few Individual batsmen scored runs in the previous fixtures but there was no regular partnership in batting. But with nothing to lose, the West Indies will be playing for pride and could be unstoppable if their destructive batting line up, comprising power hitters like Chris Gayle, Carlos Brathwaite, and Shai Hope, clicks.
On the other hand, Afghanistan lost all eight of their previous fixtures in the 2019 world cup. In the last match against Pakistan, they were in the game but bowlers failed to hold their nerve in the end overs. As a result, Pakistan won the game by 3 wickets. Mujeeb ur Rahman and Mohammed Nabi bowled an excellent spell, both picked two wickets and the economy was less than 3.5. In the ongoing tournament, Gulbadin led side are really struggling to fight against top teams in the tournament. The batting has been a big disappointment for Afghanistan so far in this ongoing World Cup. Their batsmen did not show the temperament to set up a decent total. Also, the opponent batsmen didn’t face any resistance from their bowling stars - Rashid Khan and Mohamed Nabi. They have really struggled in English conditions as the opposing teams have been able to get through their overs without much trouble. The Gulbadin Naib-led side will look to finish on a high after being knocked out of the tournament.

Playing in their second World Cup, Afghanistan will be eager to post their first win in the ongoing 50-over showpiece. ICC third-ranked ODI bowler Rashid Khan is having below average World Cup so far, he hasn’t been able to produce any match-winning spell. He picked just 5 wickets so far from eight games. Afghanistan is relying heavily on their key player – Rashid Khan, Mohammed Nabi and Hashmatullah Shahidi to deliver match-winning contributions. Najibullah Zadran has been the top-scorer for Afghanistan in the tournament - scored 199 runs from 7 innings, which also includes the knock of 42 runs versus Pakistan.
Mohammad Nabi is undoubtedly one of the best all-rounder’s in the world at the moment. With 2697 runs and 127 wickets to his name in 120 ODI matches. He picked nine wickets so far in the tournament and scored 105 runs. His good form is very pivotal for Afghanistan success against Windies.

Two-time champions have been inconsistent so far in the competition and will have to produce a clinical performance against Afghanistan. For West Indies, the lack of runs from top-order batsmen has been their main problem in this World Cup. Chris Gayle has failed to deliver big runs for the side so far in the tournament and scored 235 runs in 7 matches at an average of 33.57. Left-hander will have another opportunity to do well with the bat against Afghanistan.
The left-hander, Nicholas Pooran, who smashed the century in the previous game, is the top-scorer for Windies in the tournament. He scored 309 runs from 7 games at an average of 51.50. Once again the onus will be on him to carry on his form and deliver match-winning contribution.
Shai Hope, the Windies principal player in recent times haven’t produced any performance of note so far in the tournament. He is having very poor run in the tournament, scored just 197 runs in 7 innings. However, he is the top scorer for Windies against Afghanistan, scored 149 runs in 4 innings at an average of 49. He would be hoping to score big in their last game of the ongoing tournament.
On the bowling front, left-arm quick Sheldon Cottrell has certainly made an impact with the new ball and claimed 14 wickets so far in the competition. Captain Jason Holder also bowled exceedingly well in the previous game and picked up two crucial wickets. He picked total eight-wicket so far in the tournament.

The climate in Leeds on Thursday is expected to be partly cloudy. There is no hint for the rain during the course of the game.
Since 1 Jan 2000, 351 is the highest Batting score at this venue, while 285 is the average score. The team batting second after winning toss has a better record at this venue, won 10 times from last 17 games.
Considering the overcast conditions, there will be an initial movement for the pacer. Hence, we anticipate the team winning toss will definitely wish to bat second.
Windies have depth in resources and got fire-power in their side who can win the match on their own. Furthermore, they got a good bunch of pacers in the side. On the other hand, though statistically, Afghanistan holds better ODI record against Windies, they need to raise their game with the bat and ball in order to secure their first win of the competition.
Based on the performances from both the team in the tournament, we predict West Indies will win this match.
