Afghanistan team will be eager to get back in winning ways after the disappointing ODI world cup event. The host side is coming to this series following a test victory against Bangladesh and the great T-20 performance in the Tri-Series.
Afghanistan would be relying heavily on their key player – Rashid Khan, Mohammed Nabi and Asghar Afghan to deliver match-winning contributions. In batting, Rahmat Shah and Asghar Afghan would be the key player for Afghans. Rahmat Shah, with 542 runs from last 17 ODI inning has been the leading scorer for the side in recent times, whereas experienced Asghar Afghan with 445 runs at an average of 40.45 has been the second-best for the Host. Batting duo needs to play with responsibility and scorer big runs.
Mohammad Nabi is undoubtedly one of the best all-rounder’s in the world at the moment. He is currently the third-best ICC ODI all-rounder, With 2699 runs and 128 wickets to his name in 121 ODI matches. His good form is very pivotal for Afghanistan's success against Windies.
Pace bowling unit will be lead by skipper Gulbadin Naib. He is a leading wicket-taker for Afghanistan last year, picked 22 wickets from the last 14 ODI games. In the Spin department, the side possesses great quality. They got Rashid khan and Mujeeb UR Rahman. They are currently at fifth and ninth place in ICC ODI bowling ranking respectively. Bowling duo is the biggest threat for the Windies.
Key Players: Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Rahmat Shah
West Indies ODI team always look very formidable on paper however the big names in the Squad failed to deliver the consistent performance that has been the main cause of their failure of late. For this series, Windies have included a player like B King, Khary Pierre following their great success in CPL 2019.
In the batting, the team would be relying heavily on Shai Hope to make most of the runs. Though he has below average world cup, he is the leading scorer for windies in last year. He scored 1191 runs from 23 ODI innings at a staggering average of 59.55. As far as the team combination is concerned, yet again, the onus will be on Shai Hope to anchor the whole innings. The young left-handed batsmen, Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmayer, now also looks pretty settled in the national team. The Southpaws played great knocks in recent times and they would be keen to carry on the good form.
In the opening game, windies is expected to open the batting with Even Lewis and newcomer Brendon Kong. Brendon King, Guyana Amazon Warriors batsman in CPL, was rewarded for scoring 496 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of nearly 150. He is a great prospect for Windies in the shorter format. In the middle order, Windies possess one of the best all-rounder of the game, Jason Holder. The former skipper had great success with the bat and ball in recent time.
On the bowling front, Left-arm quick Sheldon Cottrell has certainly made an impact in the international games. He picked 33 wickets from the last 17 ODI games. Alzarri Joseph and Romario Shepherd to support the pace attack from another end. Rostan Chase is likely to be the lone specialist spinner
Key Player – Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Sheldon Cottrell
The climate in Lucknow on Wednesday is Hazy. It will be a day-night match, and it won't be easy for spinners to bowl in the second inning due to heavy dew expected at the venue.
It will the first ODI to play at the new home ground of Afghanistan. Before this game, only lone T20 international game played at this venue. India won that game against Windies. Batting first India 195, in chasing the Windies bundled out on 124 runs.
Considering the Dew factor and unknows about the venue track, the team would be looking to chase the score after winning the toss.
Hence, we anticipate the team winning toss will look to bowl first.
Windies have depth in resources and got fire-power in their side who can win the match on their own. Furthermore, they got a good bunch of pacers in the side. On the other hand, though statistically, Afghanistan holds better ODI record against Windies, they have vulnerabilities in the middle order batting.
Hence, based on the team combinations and recent performances we predict West Indies are the favorites to win the first game!
