Australia is leading the Test series 2-0 and has sealed the series already against New Zealand. Various reasons ranging from the players’ injuries, the top-order failure, the lack of runs from the skipper placed the visitors on the edge of a clean-sweep against daunting Australia. The Australian side is flourishing under the captaincy of Paine, whose contribution with the bat and the gloves was outstanding (79 runs, 7 catches, 1 stumping, and 1 run-out) too. Warner, Smith, Head, Labuschagne, and Burns all have scored well in one inning or the other in the ongoing series, while Starc, Lyon, Cummins, Pattinson put-up equal efforts with the ball.
On the other hand, New Zealand players, especially their batsmen lacked good applications with the bat. With 0-2 down, the Kiwis now play this Test with the intent to avoid the white-wash and get some consolation prize. Will their batsmen follow the path shown by Blundell which he displayed in the second Test’s second innings with his century?

After the remarkable tour to England where Aussies drew the Test series 2-2 to retain the Ashes and winning two-Test series at home against Pakistan 2-0, it could be the third successful Test series for Australia, and most probably their second consecutive clean sweep, if they win the third game at Sydney. This will be the last Test in which Steven Smith is not eligible to be captain of Australia, as his leadership ban is finishing at the end of March.
Aussies have been ruthless at home, be it against Pakistan in the preceding Test series, or New Zealand in the ongoing series. In the first match, Labuschagne’s 143 runs knock led the team to 416 before Starc’s five-wicket haul powered the team to crush the visitors at 166. Eight wickets equally shared between Starc and Lyon in the second innings enabled Australia to take 1-0 lead in the series with the victory by 296 runs.
Labuschagne smashed another half-century at Melbourne in the first innings of the second Test, while Travis Head's 114 runs and Smith's patient innings of 85 off 242 balls took the team's total beyond 450. Cummins (5 for 28), Pattinson’s 3 and Starc’s 2 wickets bowled out the visitors this time under 150. Paine’s side gave the target of 488 to the Kiwis only to bowl them out for 240 thanks to Lyon’s 4 wickets, and Pattinson’s 3 wickets plus one assisted run-out.
Marnus Labuschagne (985 runs in the last 9 matches), and Smith (965 runs in his last 8 matches) are the leading run-scorers for Australia. Pat Cummins (49 wickets in the last 10 matches) and Lyon (39 wickets in the last 10 Tests) are the leading wicket-takers.

Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls missed the training session on the first day of the new year due to flu symptoms, however, after a day's rest, it's expected they would hit the field. The visiting captain Williamson, just like Pakistan’s skipper Azhar Ali, has been dealing with the dearth of runs (57 runs in four innings – 34, 14, 9, 0) in Australia. This is one of the major factors leading to the dismal state in which the visitors are in. It’s not about his form, as he already scored a century and a half-century against England in the preceding Test series. Maybe it’s a mixture of pressure and bad luck.
Missing out Trent Boult in the first Test and Lockie Ferguson in the second due to injuries have partially troubled the skipper, while shot-selections of the top-order added to his worries. To get out on a duck in the second innings of the second Test, Williamson was unfortunate to say the least, as the umpire ruled LBW decision against him, and the review couldn’t save him as the ball was just clipping the top of the leg stump, for which umpire’s call was considered the final decision.
Latham was the only batsman to touch 50 runs mark in the first innings of the second Test, as visitors were bowled out for 148 while following Aussies’ total of 467. Tom Blundell stood tall and smashed a century (121 runs, 210 balls, 321 minutes, 15 fours) in the second innings, but with no major support from other batsmen, the Kiwis eventually lost the Test by 247 runs. Neil Wagner was the leading wicket-taker as he picked up 7 wickets in the match (4 for 83 and 3 for 50).
Tom Latham (1051runs in the last 10 matches), and Ross Taylor (724 runs in his last 10 matches) are the leading run-scorers for the visitors. Neil Wagner (49 wickets in last 8 matches) and Tim Southee (46 wickets in last 10 Tests) are the leading wicket-takers.

On the first day of the match i.e. Friday, there is the possibility of patchy rain. It will be mostly dry with little or no precipitation and cloud covering 41% of the sky, the humidity will be around 85%. The daytime temperature will reach 26°c, while the nighttime minimum temperature is expected to be around 22°c. On the third, fourth and fifth days of the Test, moderate or heavy rain showers are predicted, which may impact the result of the game.
The venue for the match is Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney.
Since January 2010, Australia hosted 10 Tests here, out of which only once the team chasing the total in the fourth innings have won, while 3 Tests are drawn. The surface looks very good for batting, however, the team winning the toss would definitely avoid batting on the fourth or fifth day, hence batting first will be the practical choice.
The team winning the toss should opt to Bat first.
New Zealand has already lost the series, and the failure of Williamson, their marquee batsman, and the skipper, is one of the key reasons for their series defeat. The visiting team’s batsmen are not able to put enough runs on the boards for their bowlers, while the host team’s batsmen and bowlers are producing better results collectively. Overall statistics are in favor of the hosts, who also look formidable at the moment.
Our prediction is that Australia will defeat New Zealand and seal the series 3-0 unless rain affects a good amount of playtime!
