It’s time for Australia to switch from red-ball games to the shortest format of the game – Twenty20. Australia returned home with Ashes trophy retained after the thrilling test series in England ended in a draw (2-2). Australia’s last T20 series was in India early this year, which they won by 2-0. After dominating IPL and 50 over World Cup with the bat, David Warner’s drought of runs during the Ashes in England is the only cause of concern for him as well as the team management.
Sri Lanka’s previous tour of Pakistan was successful, as they trounced Pakistan by 3-0 in the T20 series. The clean sweep allowed Sri Lanka to rise to seventh place in the ICC ranking.

Australia is at the fifth position in ICC T20 rankings, and with one year to go for the T20 World Cup, their focus would be to get the team balance right and improve their records in T20 games. With David Warner and Steven Smith back in the team after their ball-tampering bans, the hosts would want to leave no stone unturned to grab the only trophy missing in their unit – T20 World Cup. After the Adelaide Oval game to kick off the T20 series, they will be hosting the next two games at Brisbane (Oct. 30) and Melbourne (Nov. 1).
In this first game, all eyes will be on the duo – Smith and Warner. The left-hander has scored 692 runs at 69.20 in his 12 innings in IPL 2019, including eight 50s and a century, but his performances in the Ashes in England were miserable. The number one test batsman - Steven Smith (record 774 runs in the Test series in England) is playing in a T20 match after a long gap. Reputed hitter Glenn Maxwell (341 runs in last 8 innings) is the key player for the hosts in T20 games, while Billy Stanlake (9 wickets in the past five games) leads the bowling unit.

For Sri Lanka, it will be more like a preview of playing conditions ahead of the T20 World Cup to be held next year in Australia. After losing the ODI series in Pakistan, Sri Lanka swept the T20 series 3-0 against the number one T20 team. In that series, Danushka Gunathilaka, Oshada Fernando and Bhanuka Rajapaksa had smashed one half-century in each of the T20 matches and they were the top-scorer batsmen. Wanindu Hasaranga (8 wickets), Nuwan Pradeep (7 wickets) and Isuru Udana (5 wickets) were the top three wicket-takers for the Sri Lankan team in the series against Pakistan.
In the first T20, Danushka Gunathilaka (57 runs), Nuwan Pradeep (3 for 21) and Isuru Udana (3 for 11) routed Pakistan by 64 runs. Rajapaksa’s 48 balls 77 and 7 wickets between Pradeep and Hasaranga got them the series-winning second game. Oshada Fernando (78 runs in 48 balls) powered the team to their third win to jolt the number one T20 team.
As per the statistics of recent matches, Isuru Udana (177 runs in last 9 innings) and Niroshan Dickwella (175 runs in 8 innings) are the top run-scorers for Sri Lanka, while Lasith Malinga (14 wickets in 8 innings) and Wanindu Hasaranga (12 wickets in 6 innings) lead the bowling unit.

On the match day, the weather is forecasted to be patchy rain possible. The daytime temperature is going to reach 16 °c and the temperature is going to dip to 11 °c at night. It will be mostly dry with little or no precipitation and cloud covering 64% of the sky, the humidity will be around 73%.
The venue for this match is Adelaide Oval. The ground is an oval, which makes straight sixes a difficult to hit, but ones square of the wicket are more common.
On this ground, 4 international T20 matches are played so far, out of which two are won by the teams batting first and twice the chasing teams have won. The highest total in the first innings here is 188 by India against Australia. Recent matches here show batting first is a viable option. It is recommended to bowl first after winning the toss.
Sri Lanka improved their ICC ranking after the clean sweep in Pakistan, while Australia return home after demanding Ashes series. Both the teams look good at the moment, however, Australia has players of caliber a notch above Sri Lankan players. The visitors have shown what they could do against strong opponents like Pakistan. It is not going to be an easy task to defeat a team like Australia, containing great batsmen like Smith and Warner and power hitters like Maxwell who is best suited for the shortest format of the game. Lasith Malinga holds the key for Sri Lanka. The overall statistics are in favour of the Aussies, also they will be at an advantage due to home conditions.
We predict that Australia will defeat Sri Lanka to gain an early lead in the series.
