Australia surpassed India in the ICC T20 rankings after thrashing Sri Lanka in the first T20I game played at Adelaide. The hosts secured the biggest ever T20I win, at the same time the visitors received the biggest ever T20I defeat, as the winning margin was 134 runs. It was a reality check for Sri Lanka after their 3-0 series win against Pakistan.
While Nuwan Pradeep was the only decent bowlers among all the Sri Lankan players, who conceded runs at 7 per over from his four, for Australia, Aaron Finch, Maxwell contributed remarkably with the bat, while the bowlers collectively ensured the record winning margin.

The win in the first T20I game has helped Australia to surpass India in ICC T20 rankings, as Aussies hold the fourth position now. The first game of Smith-Warner duo at home could not have got any better. The hosts trounced the visitors by 134 runs. Warner simply continued his Indian Premier League form and smashed his maiden T20I century against Lasith Malinga led Sri Lankan bowling attack.
Top-three Australian batsmen produced two century-plus partnerships to destroy the visitors in the first 20 overs of the game. In addition to the player of the match - Warner (56 balls 100) - Finch (36 balls 64) and Maxwell (26 balls 62) were the key contributors in the team’s total of 232 runs.
Smith, though listed at third number, did not even have to come and bat. Adam Zampa (3 for 14) was the highest wicket-taker, while Starc (2 for 18) and Cummins (2 for 27) and Agar (1 for 13) shared rest of the wickets. The power-hitter Glenn Maxwell (405 runs in last 10 innings) is the key batsman, while Adam Zampa (9 wickets in previous 9 games) is the top bowler in terms of wickets.

Though Sri Lanka had lost the ODI series in Pakistan, their T20 series win (3-0) had instilled confidence in their players before flying down to Australia. However, they played a hefty price for quite a few strategical mistakes in the first T20I match. To begin with, they left out all-rounder Isuru Udana who took 5 wickets in the two T20 games he played in Pakistan and had the batting strike rate of 131.78. Also, giving away the chance to bat first to the hosts proved to be a costly decision.
Apart from Nuwan Pradeep (4 overs 28 runs 0 wickets), none of Sri Lankan bowlers had any answers to onslaughts by the hosts. Four of their bowlers conceded at the rate of more than 10 runs per over, while Kasun Rajitha conceded the most – 75 – in his four overs. During the chase, none of the batsmen showed any intent or application as five of their batsmen fell in single digit and none crossed 20 runs mark.
As per the statistics of recent matches, Isuru Udana (175 runs in last 8 innings) and Niroshan Dickwella (154 runs in last 6 innings) are the top run-scorers for Sri Lanka, while Lasith Malinga (10 wickets in 7 innings) and Wanindu Hasaranga (12 wickets in 7 innings) lead the bowling unit.

On the match day, the weather is forecasted to be mostly cloudy, sunny in intervals. The daytime temperature is going to reach 25 °c and the temperature is going to dip to 16 °c at night.
The venue for this match is Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba, Brisbane. The surface is very good for batting, especially in the first innings.
The highest total at this venue in a T20I game is 209 by Australia against South Africa. The average scores batting first and second are 178 and 152. While the highest total chased on this ground is 161. Three out of four T20I matches played here are won by the teams batting first. It is recommended to bat first after winning the toss.
The team Australia made a huge statement upfront after crushing Sri Lanka by 134 runs, and another win here would get them the title. They are just one game away from winning the second consecutive T20I series, the earlier one came in February this year against India. The momentum is skewed towards the host heavily after the first match and it is more likely that the second game would yield similar results.
We predict that Australia would defeat Sri Lanka in the second T20I match of the series and secure the title!
