Match Preview

Australia Women lost just one game so far in this tournament, which was the initial game against the other finalist team - India. It sets up the perfect finale for the world to witness. On one hand, we have a strong Australian team, having an advantage being the hosts, while India’s performance and the journey till the final are remarkable.

India was fortunate to advance to the final of the World Cup, their first Final appearance, as their semi-final against England was washed out. They won all their group-stage games and remained at the top of the table, enabling them to sail to the Final as per ICC rules, as there was no reserve day.

For Australia Women, it was not an easy semi-final game, as their star performer Perry was injured and left out; rain interruptions were adding to the challenge too. Still, admirably they managed to defend the decent total of 134 and reached the final, winning it by 5 runs (D/L method).

Teams Preview

Australia Women

After losing the opening game of the tournament to India Women, the hosts won all their remaining group-stage games, to take the second place in Group-A, and faced South Africa Women team in the semi-final at Sydney. The game was tough for the hosts for more than one reasons. But overcoming all the odds, they defeated South Africa and made it to the final. Batting first in the rain-affected game and sticky conditions, they made 134 runs thanks to skipper Meg Lanning’s run-a-ball 49. Schutt took 2 wickets, giving away just 17 runs in her 3 overs. When 27 needed in last 12 balls, Schutt gave just two runs in her first five balls of the penultimate over and removed Luus. Eventually, they defended the target of 98 runs in 13 overs (D/L method) by a narrow margin of five runs. The stage is perfectly set for Australia as they appear in the final at their home.

Beth Mooney is the top scorer for Australia Women (252 runs in last 6 innings, average 63.00, strike rate 121.73) followed by Alyssa Healy (165 runs in last 6 innings). Jess Jonassen leads the bowling department with 12 wickets in last 6 matches (economy of 5.73 strike rate of 11.5) while Megan Schutt has taken 10 wickets in last 6 matches.

India Women

The team India is the only team in the World Cup not to lose a game so far. The washed-out semi-final game against England Women took the side directly in the final. While the players would have loved to enter the final after playing the semi-final match, the fact that they focused on staying at the top of the group stage earned them the final berth.

First, they defeated Australia and continued their winning streak against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Smriti Mandhana is unexpectedly out of form in the past few matches, however, this could just be her day, as she is a big-game player. She had smashed a half-century in the Tri-Nation Final against Australia last month. A lot can be expected from the spinners Radha Yadav, Deepti Sharma and Poonam Yadav. However, the biggest challenge for Harmanpreet Kaur and her team would be to rise to the occasion in the final. Perry’s absence is a big relief for the visitors as no bowler has taken more wickets against India in T20Is than Perry.

Shafali Verma is the top run-scorer for India Women (171 runs in the last 5 games) followed by Smriti Mandhana (104 runs in the last 4 games). Poonam Yadav leads the bowling department with 9 wickets in the last 4 matches while Shikha Pandey has taken 7 wickets in the last 5 matches.
