The 31st game of the World Cup would be a very important one for Bangladesh as they play Afghanistan at The Rose Bowl, Southampton. Afghanistan has lost all their six games so far and is out of contention for the semi-finals. Bangladesh has done well to win two wins in the tournament and could have won another two with some luck on their side. Winning the upcoming game would keep their hopes alive and the team would press hard for a win.
Afghanistan’s recent form has been bad and they have failed to live up to the expectations of their fans and the cricket community. Bangladesh has impressed in the tournament and it would be an uphill challenge for the Afghan side to pull a win over Bangladesh in the next game.

Mashrafe Mortaza would count the last game’s loss against Australia as a lost opportunity. They did well to scare the World Champions with a remarkable fightback after having conceded 381 runs while bowling. The side has been let down by its bowling on more than one occasion in the tournament and the skipper would want his side to regroup and win the next game.
Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar have batted well in this tournament at the top but the start of the show has been Shakib Al Hasan with two hundred so far. Mushfiqur Rahim also made a brilliant hundred in the last game. The lower order for Bangladesh has proved handy with the boys scoring heavily. Liton Das, Sabbir Rahman and Mahmudullah have been contributing with the bat making the line-up look strong.
The bowlers have let down the side in many of the games so far. Mehidy Hasan has had a brilliant tournament but the rest of the bowlers haven’t been consistent. Shakib has done well in parts but Mustafizur Rahman and Mortaza haven’t been able to deliver the goods. They along with Rubel Hossain and Sarkar will need to bowl well in the next game for the side to win.

Gulbadin Naib would have been very upset with his side’s performance with the bat in the last game against India. They had the strong Indian batting line-up on the mat restricting them to 224 runs bowling first. They looked good in the case but allowed the nerves to get better of them and lost the game by 11 runs. They are out of the contention for the semi-finals and would look to play for pride in the next game.
Afghanistan’s batting has been poor in the tournament and most of their batsmen have thrown away their wickets in most of the games. Mohammad Nabi played well for his 52 in the last game. There were good contributions from Rahmat Shah and Gulbadin Naib. But the rest of the batting line-up has failed them. The likes of Hazratullah Zazai, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Asghar Afghan would need to bat well in the next game against Bangladesh for the side to win.
Their bowling was brilliant against India after the pounding they received at the hands of England. Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi bowled brilliantly and so did Rashid Khan who hasn't quite lived up to his reputation. The side would expect to see better bowling effort from Aftab Alam and skipper Gulbadin Niab in the next game to stop the strong Bangladeshi batting line-up.

There would be cloud cover at Southampton on June 24 and it would make conditions difficult for batting. The pitch was a tough one to bat on in the last game as well and batsmen will need to dig in to score runs. Any score above 250 runs would be difficult to chase on this surface.
VENUE
The Rose Bowl, Southampton is one of the bigger grounds in England with a long straight and square boundaries. This makes it a tough ground to play the lofted shots and the batsmen have to work their ones and twos. The spinners have always done well at this venue with the slowness of then surface coming to their aid.
The conditions would be tough for batting as we have seen in the earlier game at this venue. The side chasing the score would have an advantage of controlling the momentum of the game. We expect the skipper winning the toss to invite the opposition to bat first on this surface.
Bangladesh has had a good tournament and perhaps better than the results would suggest as they have challenged the bigger sides. On the other hand, it has so far been a forgettable campaign for the Afghanistan side. They haven’t been able to open their account going into the seventh game though they have done well in patches. As things stand between the two sides and the lack of confidence in the Afghan camp we expect Bangladesh to be favorites to win this one.
