Both the teams, Brisbane Heat (2012-13) and Sydney Thunder (2015-16) have grabbed the Big Bash Trophy once. Brisbane Heat's second-best season was in the year 2016-17 when they reached till the Semi-Final stage.
In the group stage of the previous season, Brisbane Head and Sydney ended up at the fifth and the sixth place respectively as both the teams fell short of just 1 point to reach the playoffs.
The last time these two teams met was in January 2019, which had to be called off due to a major power outage in the entire Brisbane. It left Thunders with no choice but to accept a point even though they were in the leading position to win the match.
In that match, Sydney Thunder had posted a total of 186 while batting first thanks to Shane Watson’s 62-balls century and took two wickets of Brisbane Heat in 3 overs of play before it was aborted.

In the previous season, out of 14 group-stage games, they had won 6 and lost 7, as they missed the playoffs just by a point needed to take up the fourth place. Brisbane Heat have got a new coach in Darren Lehmann, who led the side to the title in BBL-2. Inclusion of AB de Villiers is expected to give Heat huge returns. He and Mujeeb Ur Rahman will be available for the second half of the tournament till the finals while Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne will be unavailable in the early part of the tournament.
The left-arm pacer Josh Lalor (20 wickets in BBL 2018-19) was the Heat’s leading wicket-taker last summer, while Chris Lynn was the top-scorer for Brisbane with his 385 runs. Max Bryant is the player to watch. He has scored 238 runs in previous 10 matches he played. Tom Banton is also expected to exhibit good performances, especially on Gaba’s surface.
Key Players: Max Bryant, Chris Lynn, Josh Lalor, Ben Cutting
Ben Cutting, Zahir Khan, Ben Laughlin, Sam Heazlett, Matt Renshaw, Chris Lynn, Josh Lalor, Mitchell Swepson, Mark Steketee, Max Bryant, Tom Banton
Sydney Thunder’s agreement with the off-spinner Chris Green for the next six seasons is the longest deal in BBL history. Green would be one of the key weapons of Sydney Thunder. The team has given Callum Ferguson the opportunity to lead the side in place of the retired star player Shane Watson, hoping he would lead the side with equal or more zeal. The team without Watson would depend on the performances of Usman Khawaja and Alex Hales. Khawaja (992 runs) is the overall second-highest run-scorer after Watson (1014 runs) and from the current squad the most successful batsman for Sydney Thunder.
Based on the statistics from the recent few matches of Sydney Thunder, Callum Ferguson (342 runs in last 10 innings) leads the batting department while Gurinder Sandhu (7 wickets in last 10 matches) is in charge of the bowling unit. Sandhu has taken 39 wickets across all BBL seasons. Ferguson’s innings of 113(unbeaten) against Perth Scorchers in the last season is the highest individual score by a Thunder batsman.
Key Players: Usman Khawaja, Chris Green, Callum Ferguson.
Alex Hales, CP Tremain, Daniel Sams, Nathan John McAndrew, Arjun Nair, Matthew Gilkes, Christopher Green, Usman Khawaja, Callum Ferguson, Jonathan Cook, Alex Ross
On the match day, the weather at Brisbane is expected to be partly cloudy. Daytime temperature can reach 31°c while nighttime minimum temperature is expected to be around 22°c.
The venue for the match is Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba, Brisbane.
The average first and second innings score on this surface is 166 and 145, while the highest total is 209 by Australia against South Africa. The highest total chased is 161 while the lowest defended is 158. Out of five T20Is played here, 3 times the teams batting first have won.
The team winning the toss should opt to bat first.
Brisbane Heat has never lost a game against Sydney Thunder at home. The only game they lost was at Sydney in BBL-2014-15. The Brisbane Heat have a much sturdier batting and bowling unit compared to Sydney Thunder.
Facing Brisbane bowlers would be a challenging task for Thunder batsmen, while Chris Lynn along with Tom Banton could destroy Sydney Thunder’s bowling attack. The statistics are clearly in favour of the hosts.
We predict that Brisbane Heat will defeat Sydney Thunder!
