Defending champions Brisbane Heat Women take on the impressive Melbourne Renegades Women in this mouth-watering 2nd semi-final of the WBBL 2019-20 season. Brisbane Heat has been easily the team of the tournament and had topped the league stage with 20 points. Melbourne Renegades, after slipping at the midway stage, have made a remarkable comeback and have 3 games in a row to make it to the semi-finals.
As the reigning champions and having the home advantage, the Heat would certainly like to believe they have the edge in this contest. However, it should be noted here that the Renegades have won 5 of their last 7 games against Brisbane. Add to that their sudden spurt if form and they would certainly be posing a real challenge to Brisbane. Moreover, the Renegades defeated Brisbane the last time the two sides met in this tournament while chasing down an imposing 180-plus total. Brisbane would hence have to be at their very best to enter their second successive final.

Brisbane Heat Women has easily been the most polished and in-form team of the tournament. Kirby Short’s team has won 8 of their last 9 games in the WBBL 2019-20. That should give them enough confidence for the semi-final match. However, their last loss came against the Renegades and that should make them wary.
With Beth Mooney - the league’s second-highest run-scorer - in their ranks, Brisbane will certainly have enough reasons to be positive. Mooney now has 672 runs in the season after another fifty in the team's last game and is closing in on 700 runs which she would hope to achieve in the semis itself.
Jess Jonassen (348 runs) and Maddy Green (252 runs) will be the other two batters to watch out for as they have held the middle-order together.
Leg-spinner Amelia Kerr has been absolutely brilliant this season for The Heat with her terrific economical bowling. Kerr produced sensational figures of 2-4 in the last match and has an economy rate of just 6.18 this season. Then there are Jess Jonassen (19 wickets), Delissa Kimmince (17 wickets) and Sammy-Jo Johnson (16 wickets) who have been consistent for the team. This gives Sydney a potent bowling unit as well along with their solid batting outfit.

Melbourne Renegades Women are flying high and rightly so. They have come charging into the semis after being almost certain to have lost the spot. They defeated Sydney Thunder Women comfortably by 29 runs in their last league game and are looking all set for the big semis. The fact that they took down Brisbane Heat Women to begin their turnaround in the season will give them plenty of confidence.
Jessica Duffin (500 runs) has been the key for the Renegades. The captain has done the bulk of the scoring for the team and has held the middle-order together whenever they have fallen apart. Her composed 53 in the last match was another display of her prominence to the team.
Then there is opener Danielle Wyatt (468 runs) who has been in terrific form through the season. The two will hold the key for the Renegades in the semis. The other one who can make an impact is Courtney Webb. However, the team will greatly miss Tammy Beaumont who is off for national duties.
Speedster Lea Tahuhu was very good in the last game against Sydney Thunder Women. She will certainly be watched out for along with Molly Strano (20 wickets) and Maitlan Brown (16 wickets). These three give the Renegades some great options and would be handy against the Heat in the semis.

The pitch at Allan Border Field, Brisbane, has something in it for both the batters and the bowlers. Seamers will get help early on when the pitch is fresh and batters would enjoy playing their strokes after the first few overs. While some big scores has been made on this venue, the pitch would have slowed down by now. Expect a low-scoring game with a total of 140-150 being a challenging one. The weather for the match is expected to be bright and sunny and we can expect a full 40-over game.
The Allan Border Field, Brisbane, has known to be a good surface which produces even contests between the bat and the ball instead of blatant run feasts . The average score batting first here is 145 while the average score batting second is 149. However, with both the teams having star-studded line-ups, we can expect some big shots to be played along with formidable total.
Both the teams are good chasing sides and both would ideally look to bowl first in this knock-out game. However, the pressure of chasing in the semis might be risky. Hence, winning the toss and batting first is the safest option.
In the last 5 games between Brisbane Heat Women and Melbourne Renegades Women, Brisbane has lost thrice. Despite that, the defending champions have been the team to beat in the WBBL 2019-20 and would start as favorites for this clash. You simply cannot take the Heat lightly and with a balanced and in-form outfit, they would be looking to make it to their second successive finals.
Melbourne Renegades Women have undoubtedly surprised everyone in the last two weeks with their spectacular show. They are expected to give a tough challenge to the Heat. This being said, they are too dependent on their two-star batters and with Tammy Beaumont, their batting unit looks fragile. A magical show by Duffin and Wyatt, though, might see them upsetting Brisbane. However, we still back the Brisbane Heat Women to be the winners of this clash.
