T&Cs apply, 18+
The two unbeaten teams after two games but with very different fortunes face off against each other at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in the 9th match of the Karnataka Premier League. The Shivamogga Lions who did not manage to win a single game last year and ended at the bottom have started this season’s competition brilliantly winning their first two games and are at the top of the table. Meanwhile, last year’s runner up and a team which was unbeaten in last year’s group stages have 2 points from two games with rain ending the game midway.
The Shivamogga Lions have been the form team in the tournament with their top order batsmen making big runs and their fast bowlers picking up key wickets. They will be looking to continue their momentum in their third game and further strengthen their position at the top of the table. The Bengaluru Blasters who have had a stop-start tournament so far will be hoping for no rains and their first win of this year’s tournament.

The Bengaluru Blasters will be disappointed to have had to settle for a single point against the Bijapur Bulls as they had restricted them for a paltry total and had made a good start before rains played spoilsport. However, they’ll be satisfied by the performance of their bowlers, especially their spinners who restricted the defending champions to a small total after Bharat Chipli had given the Bulls a rollicking start.
Key Players:
Rohan Kadam: The stylish left-hander who looked in good touch in his brief stint at the crease against the Mysuru Warriors and will look to carry on with his good touch and provide great starts at the top of the order. The Blasters will be looking up to him to provide solidity against the strong Lions new ball bowling attack. He had a brilliant Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy in Karnataka’s winning campaign and will look to keep up the good work.
Anand Doddamani: The slow left-arm orthodox bowler who had an excellent campaign in last year’s tournament for the Blasters was bought back by the Blasters in the auction for a good amount. The left-arm spinner was consistently economical and picked up important wickets all through the last year’s tournament and will be looking to do the same this time around. He has started off the tournament on a good note with his economical spell choking the Bulls batting line up in their last match and will look to continue in a similar vein.

The Shivamogga Lions who were bottom of the table last year without a win have started off this year’s campaign brilliantly with two wins in two games. The top-order trio of Nihal Ullal, Arjun Hoysala, and Pavan Deshpande have been in good form and have provided solid starts for the Lions. The fast bowling trio of Mithun, Pradeep and Sharath have been terrific in their opening spells and have picked up early wickets enabling their spinners to bowl with control in the middle overs.
Key Players:
Pavan Deshpande: The lanky left-hander who was the highest-paid player in this year’s auction has already proven his worth for the Lions in their first two games. He played a solid cameo in their first game to get them past the opposition score while his half-century in the second game ensured the Lions had a defendable score. The player who has also been part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad will be looking to continue in a similar vein for the rest of the tournament.
Abhimanyu Mithun: The experienced fast bowler was bought by the Shivamogga Lions in this year’s auction and was made the captain of the franchisee. And the former India international has not disappointed leading the team from the front with his bowling. Mithun along with Pradeep and Sharath have formed the fast bowling trio which has rocked opposition batsmen in the powerplay overs leaving the opponents playing catching up for the rest of the innings. He will be expected to continue being the aggressive bowling option and share his experience with his younger teammates.

The pitches which have been under the covers for majority of the time in this tournament have played reasonably well. The ball under lights has tended to slow down and make it harder for the batsmen to score runs. The spinners have had a good time with the slow pitch and a little turn available on the surface and will hope to chole the middle overs. The rains continue to look like they will affect the games regularly and both teams will be hoping it gives a miss during their match.
VENUE
The M.Chinnaswamy stadium is one of the best grounds in India in terms of the drainage and ground staff and they have done a great job in ensuring the games keep going in spite of heavy overnight rains. The venue which is usually a batting beauty has changed a little because of the weather and the bowlers have an equal part to play in the games.
While the pitches have seemed to slow down in the second part of the innings, captains winning the toss will still be looking to chase as there still does not seem to be a consensus on what a good score is. Also, the consistent threat of rain means that teams will prefer to chase and take advantage of any changes due to rain.
Two teams which are unbeaten so far in the tournament meet against each other in a quest to pick up two more points and get closer to the next stage of the tournament. Both teams have an evenly matched lineups with quality batsmen and effective bowlers. While the Shivamogga Lions with two consecutive wins will be confident going into this game, the Bengaluru Blasters will be hoping their match does not get affected by rain.
The two teams are very close to each other in terms of ability but based on the momentum and form in this tournament, the Shivamogga Lions will have an advantage.
