The first match of Tamil Nadu Premier League 2019 is between last year’s runner-up team Dindigul Dragons and 2017 edition’s winners Chepauk Super Gillies. While Dindigul has a star player like R Ashwin, Chepauk Super Gillies have Murugun Ashwin who played for Kings XI Punjab alongside R Ashwin, and Vijay Shankar who recently sparkled in the match against Pakistan in the ICC World Cup 2019. It’s going to be a perfect match to commence the fourth edition of Tamil Nadu Premier League, showcasing some of the best talents from both the sides.

In the first edition of the TNPL (2016), Dindigul Dragons finished 2nd on the points table and qualified for the semi-final, but they were eventually defeated by the Tuti Patriots. The star player R Ashwin’s had missed the semi-final match due to his international commitments then. N Jagadeesan had scored 397 runs from 8 innings in the TNPL 2016 at an average of over 56 and a strike rate of 120.67.
The Dragons had a bad season in 2017, as they finished 6th on the points table with just 2 wins, 4 losses and 1 abandoned match. Though in the same year, they created a record for the largest margin of victory in terms of wickets and balls to spare in the game against Madurai Super Giant, which was played on July 25, 2017, Dindigul won the match by 10 wickets and 57 balls to spare.
The Dragons bounced back in 2018 and made their way to the final, after claiming the top place in the points table with 5 wins in 7 games. They were defeated by Siechem Madurai Panthers in the final match, though they had beaten the Panthers twice that year on their way to the final. They had also registered the highest score (203 runs) of the TNPL 2018 in the qualifier 1 against Madurai, thanks to H Nishaanth (57 runs), R Vivek (54 runs), N Jagadeesan (43 runs)
Ravichandran Ashwin (c), N Jagadeesan (wk), M Mohammad, Ramalingam Rohit, Adithya Arun, NS Chaturved, Hari Nishanth, M Silambarasan, Trilok Nag, Varun Totadri, R Vivek.
Chepauk Super Gillies was on a roll in the first edition of TNPL in 2016 as they topped the points table winning 5 of their 7 games and reached the final by beating Lyca Kovai Kings by 17 runs in the 2nd semi-final. However, they lost to Tuti Patriots by a huge margin of 122 runs in the final.
The Super Gillies grabbed the second place of the points table in 2017 after winning 6 of their 7 games in the group stage, losing an only game to Tuti Patriots. The stage was set for the Super Gillies as they met the Tuti Patriots again in the final and they crushed the Patriots this time by 6 wickets to clinch their first TNPL Cup, taking revenge of all their previous defeats.
Chepauk Super Gillies had pretty forgettable outings in 2018 as they lost 7 of their 8 matches, winning only against VB Kanchi Veerans. The team needs to get back to its track of winning streaks in the fourth edition of TNPL.
K H Gopinath is the key player for Super Gillies as he was the top scorer for his team twice - in 2016 (273 Runs) and 2017 (251 runs).
Vijay Shankar (c), Gopinath, A Aarif (wk), Ganga Sridhar Raju, MK Sivakumar, Uthirasamy Sasidev, Murugan Ashwin, S Harish Kumar, Samruddh Bhat, B Arun, S Karthik.
The venue for this match is NPR college Ground, Dindigul. It has an artificial turf with a seating capacity of 5000 and floodlights. The ground has hosted 10 first-class cricket matches and 33 T20s. Out of 33 T20 games played on this ground, 11 matches were won by the teams batting first while 22 times the teams batting second have won.
The average score on this ground batting first is 157. So, chasing a fixed target seems a viable option here. It will be a good toss to win and bowl first.
Dindigul Dragons could have shown better numbers in TNPL if R Ashwin could participate in a few more matches, but his national duty prevented him to appear in more matches the Dragons. With R Ashwin’s presence this time, they will be a much better team. However, the Dindigul Dragons are to play against Chepauk Super Gillies, who are the TNPL 2017 champions and two times finalists. With players like Gopinath, Murugan Ashwin and Vijay Shankar, it’s not going to be an easy task for the Dragons to defeat the Super Gillies. Also, Gillies has a better head-to-head record against the Dindigul. Thus, we predict that Chepauk Super Gillies would defeat Dindigul Dragons in an intriguing opening match.
