CRICBETTINGBUZZ PREDICTION: India to win this match!
T&Cs apply, 18+
It will be a class of the heavyweights when India takes on host England in the 38th fixture of World Cup 2019 on Sunday. India’s dominant run continues in the tournament following their commanding 125-run victory over the West Indies in the previous game. Men in Blue remained unbeaten in the ongoing tournament. Indian bowling led by Mohammed Shami produced a splendid performance; he picked four wickets against Windies. In the last couple of games, Indian batsmen were mediocre however, the bowling unit did a remarkable job to defend the score.
Skipper Virat Kohli, the number one ICC ODI ranked batsman has been in tremendous form in the event. He is leading the team from the front, scored four 50+ scores in a row. He was awarded man of the match for his gritty knock of 72 in the previous game. With 11 points, India is now almost through and they just need another win in their next three-game including this one to seal the position in the top four. Men in blue will be hoping for another clinical performance to get the sixth win in the tournament.
On the other hand, England, following back to back defeats in the last two World Cup games, their chances of making it to semifinals are in jeopardy. They lost the two previous games against Sri Lanka and Australia. In the last couple of games, the England bowling unit did a remarkable job to restrict opponent under par score. However, their batsmen failed to perform under pressure while chasing. For England, Ben Stokes has been a boost as the all-rounder scored runs and grabbed crucial wicket in last game. In batting, he was the lone fighter versus Aussies, scored 89 runs. England principal batsman Joe Root also failed in last few games. He has already scored two century in the ongoing tournament and his good form is very imperative for success against India. They are in the toughest phase of the tournament as they need to win their remaining games in order to enter the knockout stages of the ongoing tournament. However, it would require a commanding performance from the pre-tournament favorites to break India’s winning streak in the tournament. They need to seek resurgence against India to move closer to semifinal spot.

Eoin Morgan and co. will have their task cut out against formidable Indian side. They got firepower in the side but failed to perform consistently. Joe Root has been in tremendous form in the ongoing tournament, scored 432 runs in 7 games. The onus will be on him to deliver at this big stage and get the team over the line. Arguably, he is the best player of spin in the English side and it’s imperative for him to perform against the in-form Indian spinning duo.
Opener Jason Roy, who has missed the last couple of games due to injury is likely to play versus India. He is a very explosive opener batsman and can strike hard against Indian pacer in power play. Both Jason Roy and Joe Root got a 50+ average against India in ODI. Jos Buttler, he is one of the best finishers and perhaps the best hitter of the ball in the world at the moment. But he is yet to strike gold in this world cup and will be desperate to get a big one here.
England pace attack, comprising Jofra Archer, Mark Woods, and Chris Woakes has been in excellent form in the tournament. Jofra Archer picked 16 wickets in 7 games, while Mark Woods bagged 13 wickets in 6 games. The bowling duo got a good pace and can consistently bowl above 145+ KMPH. They need to strike early in the powerplay to put pressure on India.

Virat Kohli and co. are in great touch in the tournament and they would look to carry on their form. India’s opener Rohit Sharma - 338 runs and Virat Kohli - 316 runs from five games are in top form, the side looks strong. However, it could be a challenge for a rather shaky middle-order Kedhar Jadhav and Vijay Shankar— which has failed to contribute in the previous game - to up their ante, against a star-studded England pace attack. Rohit Sharma failed to make an impact in the last couple of games. He would be looking to score big and provide solid platform up front along with partner K L Rahul. Arguably, one of the finest batsmen in ODI Virat Kohli will be the biggest threat for opponent. He scored 1112 runs against England in last 29 ODI innings at an average of 44.
MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya played a good inning in the last game versus Windies. They have the great ability to decimate any bowling attack and can take away the game from the opponent.
India has one on the best bowling attack in the tournament. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami are in a great rhythm. Bumrah picked 9 wickets from 5 games, while Mohammed Shami picked 8 wickets in just 2 games. It needs to be seen how the English batsmen tackle this in-form bowling duo. The wrist spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have got great ability to provide a breakthrough in the middle overs and to put a lid on the runs
YS Chahal, Lokesh Rahul, Kedar Jadhav, Kuldeep Yadav, Rohit Sharma, JJ Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami
Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Rishab Pant/ Vijay Shnakar, MS Dhoni (wk), Kedhar Jadhav, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammad Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra chahal
The weather in Birmingham on Sunday is partly cloudy throughout the day. There is no hint for rainfall so the complete game is expected. Edgbaston is traditionally not a very high scoring venue. Since Jan 2000, highest score at this venue is 319, while the average is 244. Out of the last 29 completed ODIs at the venue, 15 matches went in favour of the team batting first
India won the last two games defending the score, while England has lost two previous games chasing the score. So, we anticipate the team winning toss will definitely wish to bat first.
The stage is set for another enthralling encounter between India and England. Men in Blue will come to this match high on confidence, following their earlier victories in the tournament and head to head stats against England. On the other hand, England has talent in both batting and bowing to seek resurgence versus India. We expect it to be a thrilling contest but India will have an edge considering the recent form and consistent performers in the side. We predict India will win this match.
