CRICBETTINGBUZZ PREDICTION: England to win this game
T&Cs apply, 18+
While their newfound tag of ‘World Champions’ hasn’t completely sunk yet, England would start their red-ball summer campaign with a Test Match against Ireland. It would be the inaugural Test Match against England for the Irish side and a big moment for cricket’s new emerging team. The hosts are likely to treat this Test Match as the perfect opportunity for match preparation before they take on archrivals Australia in the five-match Ashes series.
Ireland would be looking to make a point at cricket’s home after narrowly missing out on playing the ICC World Cup which was cut down to a 10-side event. They have so far only played two Test Matches and have lost on both occasions and hence it would be a big test for the side. It would be interesting to see how much of impact Ireland is able to make in this game.

Joe Root would be extremely confident about the prospects of his team going into this game. They have had a great record at home over the last few years and the confidence of winning the World Cup would surely add to the momentum for the sides. They have a good mix of youth and experience and would like to start the long season with a win.
Openers Jason Roy and Rory Burns would be looking to give a good start to the side. It is the middle order that this side is very strong with Joe Root, Joe Denly and Jonny Bairstow adding to the strength of the side. Sam Curran and Moeen Ali allow the side great flexibility and ensure that they bat deep.
On the bowling front, the veterans James Anderson and Stuart Broad would be leading the attack for the side and look to trouble the Ireland batsmen. With an in-form Chris Woakes in the side and Moeen Ali along with Olly Stone adding to the variety, the side has the strength to demolish Irish batting in the game.

It will be a big challenge for William Porterfield and his men as they play one of the strongest sides in the latter’s home turf. But the skipper would want his team to play to its strengths and not be intimated by the opponents. Most of the players are highly experienced and would look to put all that to good use during the game.
William Porterfield and Paul Stirling their most experienced players form a good opening combination for the side and would have to provide the side with a good start in the game. Andrew McBrine, James McCollum, Kevin O’Brien along with Gary Wilson form a strong middle order for the side and they would be looking to do well in the game.
The bowling attack also has a good mix of players with Tim Murtagh and Boyd Rankin forming a good pace attack. Andrew McBrine, Mark Adir and Kevin O’Brien add variety to the attack and make it strong and it would require a lot of heart from them to trouble the Englishmen in the game.

The weather would remain cloudy from July 24 and this would be welcome news for the fast bowlers. The pitch is expected to offer assistance to the fast bowlers initially and it would be an easy wicket to bat on as the game progresses. The side batting first would have to be watchful in the first sessions on Day 1.
VENUE
Lord’s is undoubtedly one of the best Test venues in the world. Fast bowlers love bowling in the 1st Day as there is a good bargain from the track while batsmen who are watchful while playing has also done well over the years. Spinners come into after the pitch has worn out a bit.
In the last seven Test Matches played at Lord’s the side batting first has lost on all occasions. The ball seams and swings a lot in the first innings and fast bowlers can take good advantage of that. We expect the side winning the toss to have a bowl first and try and make use of the conditions.
It is virtually a no-match on paper as England has been winning at home regularly over the last few years and their World Cup triumph would inspire great confidence. Ireland is still new to this format of the game though the side has done well in two games that they have played so far despite ending up on the losing side. England would definitely start as overwhelming favorites to win this Test Match given the kind of batting and bowling firepower they have.
