The stage is all set for the grand finale of Caribbean Premier League 2019 as Guyana Amazon Warriors and Barbados Tridents clash for the title. Tridents defeated TKR in the second qualifier to reach the final. However, against spotless GAW, the Tridents need to level up their game. Guyana Amazon Warriors would make every effort to hold their maiden CPL trophy. In 7 CPL seasons, it is Guyana's fifth final appearance. The two teams clashed in CPL 2014 final when Barbados Tridents defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors by just 8 runs (D/L method) thanks to Shoaib Malik’s half-century while this time, he is the skipper of GAW. Guyana’s team looks strong and balance while Duminy’s injury is perturbing Barbados Tridents at the moment.

This season belongs to Guyana Amazon Warriors. They are on a dream run with 11 wins on the trot, and all they need is just one more win - the most crucial one though. Last year, at the same venue, they had faced their fourth final defeat at the hands of Trinbago Knight Riders. GAW has won 10 out of 14 matches played against Barbados Tridents played so far. In the list of top-ten run-scorers this season, GAW has three entries - Brandon King (453 runs, including 1 century and 3 half-centuries), Shoaib Malik (313 runs) and Chandrapaul Hemraj (298 runs) – from 11 matches they all played. Imran Tahir (15 wickets in 8 matches), Chris Green (13 wickets in 11 matches) and Romario Shepherd (12 wickets in 8 matches) are the key bowlers for GAW.
After winning all their 10 group-stage games, GAW thrashed Barbados Tridents in the first qualifier game by 30 runs. GAW posted 218 runs batting first, powered by Brandon King’s unbeaten 132 runs, which is the highest individual score in CPL history. In his 72-ball knock, King smashed ten fours and 11 sixes. While Shepherd’s 3 wickets came at the expense of 50 runs, Shoaib Malik (19-ball 32 and 1 for 13) and Tahir (2 for 13) played crucial roles in producing a dominating victory before the final. With most of the bowlers and batsmen making key contributions collectively, Shoaib Malik and team look all set to become the champions.
Barbados Tridents won 5 of their 10 group-stage matches and thanks to a higher net-run-rate, they had secured the second place, which set up their match against GAW as the first Qualifier. BT faced their third defeat against GAW this season, as they fell short of 30 runs while chasing 218 runs, despite Jonathan Carter’s 26-ball 49.
The Tridents managed to post a total of 160 batting first against TKR in the Qualifier 2. Charles was the top-scorer with 35 runs, however, 3 sixes of Ashley Nurse (9-ball 24) from the last two overs proved to be crucial as their winning margin was just 12 against the defending champions.
The nurse was remarkable with the ball too, as he took 2 for 14 to derail TKR’s run-chase.
In CPL 2019, Barbados skipper Jason holder (14 wickets in 12 innings) is the third-highest wicket-taker, while Walsh (21 wickets in just 8 innings) tops the list. Johnson Charles scored 376 runs this season. The fitness of JP Duminy (291 runs from 12 matches) is a cause of concern for the team management and Leniko Boucher may play in his place if he is not fit.
On the match day, there could be periods of clouds and sunshine with a shower in spots. The daytime temperature is going to reach 32 °c and the temperature is going to dip to 24 °c at night.
It is recommended to bowl first after winning the toss.
The venue for this match is Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad. On this ground, 7 CPL games have been played so far, and four of them were won by the teams batting second, while three times the team batting first has won. Among CPL matches, the highest total batting first here is 168, which is also the highest chased total.
Overall, the pitch looks good for batting and chasing seems viable. The average score here stays between 150 and 160. Anything above 160 will be a difficult chase in the high voltage final.
Guyana Amazon Warriors is the most balanced side among all CPL teams. Most of GAW’s top six batsmen scored at least one half-century in this tournament, and their spinners have been outstanding too. Barbados Tridents played well so far in the tournament and their win against the defending champions in the second Qualifier proved they are the second-best team, if not the best. GAW has lost quite a few finals till now, but this season, they look to be in a different zone.
The statistics are in favor of Guyana Amazon Warriors. Also, in this tournament, GAW defeated BT thrice and they have all the ingredients to do it once again at such a big platform. We predict that Guyana Amazon Warrior will defeat Barbados Tridents to lift their first-ever CPL trophy.
