Match Preview

The CPL returns to the Caribbean shores for its Seventh Edition. The match No 2 is between the ever-consistent Guyana Amazon Warriors and the team which is yet to qualify for the finals St Lucia Zouks at the Province stadium in Guyana.

The elusive CPL title has always evaded from the hands of the Amazon warriors as they ended up runners 4 times (2013,2014,2016,2018) in the six concluded editions. The 2018 finalists defeated edged past the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Qualifier 1 by 2 wickets, but they were beaten comfortably in the finals by the same team as the search for the title continued. They finished second in the points table in 2018 managing 6 wins out of the 10 matches. Shimron Hetmyer was their top run-scorer as he amazed 440 runs from the 12 matches he played. Imran Tahir was their most successful bowler as he picked 16 wickets from the 12 games. History repeated for Darren Sammy based his St Lucia team as they finished as the penultimate team in the 2018 points table. They have never gone past the playoff stages as they have finished at their career-best of 4th position in 2016. Pollard was their highest scorer in the previous season with 330 runs from 9 matches.

Teams Preview

Guyana Amazon Warriors

The Aussie Chris Green is a three skill-set player and the skipper had an impressive run in the BBL with 8 wickets at an economy of 7 and 172 runs. He also picked up 10 wickets in his previous CPL for Warriors. The major strength of this team is its spin attack. They have established players like Chris Green, Perumal and it will be a big shoe to fill for Shadab Khan who will replace Imran Tahir. They don’t have a pretty good fast bowling group. Kemo Paul will lead the attack in the company of Shane Rutherford and they have Ben Laughlin who can be useful with his slower deliveries. Shoaib Malik needs no introduction in this format and his experience with both bat and ball will help their team’s cause. The core strength lies with their three top-order lefties. Hemraj, Pooran, and Hetmyer all have international experience now and they will look to take their team to achieve their dream this season.

Key Players:

Shimron Hetmyer: The swashbuckling stroke-player made 440 runs at an average of exactly 40 last year, including a 49-ball century against Jamaica Tallawahs. He was not impressive in the recently concluded series against India. He played most of the series and had only one score past 30 which was scored in a Test match. He will have much more to prove.

Nicholas Pooran: The thought of Pooran and Hetmyer slotting in beside one another in the Amazon Warriors’ middle order is a tantalizing prospect. A rare ray of light in amongst a dismal Barbados Tridents campaign, he savaged 267 runs at a strike-rate of 144.32 last year. He had a decent outing against India in ODI with scores of 30 and 42.

Guyana Amazon Warriors Actual Playing XI:

Shadab Khan, Christopher Green, Shimron Hetmyer, Brandon King, Ben Laughlin, Nicholas Pooran, Romario Shepherd, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Shoaib Malik, Keemo Paul, Sherfane Rutherford

Guyana Amazon Warriors Predicted Playing XI

Hemraj, Keagan Simmons, Nicholas Pooran (Wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Shoaib Malik, Chris Green (C), Sherfane Rutherford, Keemo Paul, Shadab Khan, Ben Laughlin, Veerasmmy Perumal

St Lucia Zouks

Rebranded as St Lucia Stars in 2017, the team gets renamed back to St Lucia Zouks. Captaincy returns to Sammy from Pollard. They have many players lost to international commitment in their first two league games. They will not have the services of Thisara Perera and an in-form Grandhomme for the first 2 matches. Skipper Sammy is not left with many options. Fletcher and Campbell will look to give them solid starts. Kesrick Williams and Rakheem Cornwall who got his test cap recently take the all-rounder roles with skipper Sammy. The Team will be boosted by the addition of Fawad Ahmed and Santokie to their side.

Key Players:

Fawad Ahmed: The good thing that has happened to Zouks is the addition of the leggie Fawad Ahmed. He picked up 22 wickets from 13 matches at an impressive average of 13.5 and he was the leading wicket-taker in 2018 season.

Andre Fletcher: He has been there in the west indies set up for many years now and has a fair bit of T20 experience, He also ended up in the leading run scorer list with252 runs from 9 games.

St Lucia Zouks Actual Playing XI:

Obed McCoy, DJG Sammy, Chris Barnwell, Fawad Ahmed, Kesrick Williams, Rahkeem Cornwall, Andre McCarthy, ADS Fletcher , Krishmar Santokie, Thisara Perera, N Zadran

St Lucia Zouks Predicted Playing XI

Andre Fletcher, John Campbell, Cameron Delport, Rakheem Cornwall, Kesrick Williams, Darren Sammy(C), Christopher Barnwell, Fawad Ahmed, Santokie, Obed McCoy

Pitch And Weather Conditions

Mostly sunny and dry weather with a passing shower is expected in Guyana. The pitch offers a good bat and ball contest, an average score of 150 and the highest score of 193 was achieved in the previous edition.

Toss Prediction

Teams chasing the target have won 4 matches in the 6 matches held in the previous edition.

Winning Prediction

Clearly, the Amazon warriors are the better team on paper. They have hitters throughout their lineup. More than that they have plenty of T20 experience in their side. 5 members of this team will be in the scheme of things for the T20 World cup commencing next year and they look to seal their place with a strong performance this season. Green will be very satisfied with his resources and will hope to go one more step further and claim the Trophy for the first time.
