Big Bash League 2019-20 has now reached the knockouts with the eliminators being played between Hobart Hurricanes and their arch-nemesis Sydney Thunder. Hurricanes had nearly lost the momentum midway this season but were lucky enough to receive the services of James Faulkner, Matthew Wade and D Arcy Short at the later stages which ensured them a seat in the top five positions. Hurricanes have won three matches in a row and won’t shy away from registering a fourth at Bellerive Oval.
Meanwhile, the pressure would be on the Sydney Thunder as they have failed to dominate the Hurricane in the BBL faceoffs to date, especially amidst the conditions at Bellerive Oval. The Callum Ferguson-led side has had a roller-coaster run in the concurrent season with the bowling department failing to pile up the pressure onto the opponents at required intervals. Batters have helped the side throughout and would carry the onus in the must-win duel.

The duo of Matthew Wade (337 runs in 7 innings) and D Arcy Short (320 runs in 8 innings) would carry the onus of scoring the bulk of runs for Hurricanes in the much-anticipated T20. Wade scored an unbeaten century in the last outing while Short came up with a half-century, making them the players to keep an eye upon in the eliminator. Ben McDermott (252 runs in 13 innings) was scoring heavily in the first half of the season and along with George Bailey would be entrusted the task of scoring the runs in case the top-order topples.
Bowling wise, pacer Scott Boland (14 wickets in 9 innings) has been effective with his yorkers and cutters in the concurrent T20 season. Spinner Qais Ahmed (12 wickets in 14 innings) has been a key player for the Hurricanes in the middle-overs who has put a control over the opposition’s scoring ability. James Faulkner and Nathan Ellis have racked stellar numbers whilst bowling in the death overs and would look to extend their performance in the coming contest.
English cricketer Alex Hales (449 runs in 14 innings) is third on the list of leading run-getters in the ongoing edition of BBL. The opener looked in a good nick in the recent outing against Scorchers wherein he bashed 27-ball 47 comprising 4-fours and 2-sixes. Usman Khawaja (296 runs in 14 innings) and skipper Callum Ferguson (335 runs in 14 innings) have had decent successes this season and would play be expected to score heavily in the first ten overs. Alex Ross has been impressive in the middle-overs and once set, he could whack those bad deliveries straight out of the fence.
Bowling wise, Daniel Sams (25 wickets in 14 innings) is currently topping the bowling charts in BBL 2019-20 and would be expected to spearhead the bowling attack for the Thunder. Arjun Nair (9 wickets in 12 innings) and Chris Morris (15 wickets in 12 innings) have put up decent exhibitions with their spin and pace prowess respectively, and along with pacer, Chris Tremain would look to scalp crucial wickets in the middle-overs.

Clear skies are being anticipated with the temperature hovering between 20-23 degrees Celsius. Batsmen would be up for entertainment in these conditions while the bowlers might enjoy a bit of swing and seam early on in the contest.
The wicket at Bellerive Oval has offered great assistance to the batters in the ongoing edition of BBL. Scores as high as 172 have been chased at this venue without breaking a sweat.
The toss winning team should look to bat first on this occasion. Being a knockout, the team batting first is likely to go berserk from the very moment in the middle. Although it is a batting track, on this occasion, any scoreline above 170 would be a par total.
Hobart Hurricanes look a far competent side compared to Sydney Thunder which makes them the favorites for the upcoming feud. Be it the batting or bowling unit, the Hurricanes have just the right set of players capable of winning games from crunch situations.
The likes of James Faulkner, D Arcy Short, Matthew Wade, and Ben McDermott have done a commendable job so far and are likely to put up a stellar display in the coming duel.
