Captain Joe Root will be pleased with his side’s phenomenal performance in the Chennai Test. He certainly led the front the front with the bat and delivered a sublime 218 runs to see England post close to 600 runs in their first innings.
England won the toss and opted to bat first. The decision proved to be correct as England scored 578 runs in 190 overs in their first innings.
Joe Root was the standout performer with the bat for England and scored 210 runs off 377 balls with the help of nineteen four and two sixes. He was well supported by likes of opener Dominic Sibley and Ben Stokes, who chipped in with scores of 87 and 82 respectively. Ollie Pope, Jos Buttler and Dom Bess chipped in with crucial runs for England in the first innings.
Bowlers delivered another disciplined performance to dismiss India for less than 400 runs in their first innings. With a mammoth of 241 runs, England looked circumspect against Ravi Ashwin and co, were bundled out for 178 runs in their second innings. The visitors managed to give a mammoth target of 419 runs for India to win the game.
In the bowling department, veteran pacer James Anderson delivered two superb inswingers to clean up the likes of Shubnam Gill and Ajinkya Rahane. He claimed another big wicket of Rishabh Pant, while Jack Leach claimed four wickets in the second innings.
Jofra Archer, Dom Bess and Ben Stokes also showed disciplines in lengths and picked up crucial wickets to England register a mammoth 227-run win over India.
