In the previous T20I game India opted to field and started things with Washington Sundar.
Proteas Skipper got off to the mark with a fluent drive which showed signs of many more to come. As Hendricks struggled at one end, De Kock scored three consecutive boundaries off Saini.
Deepak Chahar did what he usually does, bowling dots and eventually picked Hendricks. Sundar and Chahar restricted SA to 39/1 in the powerplay, De Kock scoring 33 of those. Bavuma in his T20 debut kept himself busy by some quick singles and was severe on Pandya’s unidimensional short pitch ploy. De Kock scored fifty in his first assignment as captain with a boundary off Jadeja. Just when De Kock was controlling things, his opposite number took a one hand stunner to send him back. Van Der Dussen faced a rare failure as Jadeja threw himself to dismiss him off his bowling. Miller joined Bavuma in the rotation of strikes as India hurried in their overs. Bavuma struggled to clear the ropes as he perished to clear a slower ball off Chahar out of the park off and got caught by Jadeja falling just 1 short fifty in maiden T20 appearance. Hardik changed strategy in his second spell conceding just 9 runs in 2 overs and cleaned off the middle stump of Miller with a slower ball. Mighty blows, each one from Phehlukwayo and Pretorius in the final over pushed SA to the brink of 150 which was never going to be enough for the renowned Indian top three.
Rohit welcomed new-comer Nortje with two sixes over deep square leg and Dhawan sliced Rabada for two boundaries. Phehlukwayo sucked Rohit to drive and pinned him in front for 12 (12).
Kohli got his early drives and just when things were getting tight by the 8th over, Delhi boys decided to change gears. Kohli and Dhawan stood in amazement as Miller sprinted from long-on to take the catch of this series to dismiss Dhawan for a well made 40 off 31. In came Pant, the man under the radar and he added further question marks with yet another poor shot. India’s new number 4 Shreyas Iyer joined Kohli and both being technically sound, they are just a treat to watch. The run machine reached yet another fifty and his nonchalant sixes of Rabada and Fortuin again stresses the fact that this format is not only about power hitting. Shreyas Iyer’ s drill past long-on sealed the game and started their home season with an emphatic 7 wicket win.

The last match was in their control apart from a few overs. Sundar stuck to his role perfectly by giving not giving any room to the batsman and bowling to his field. Barring few deliveries Saini looked lethal and should concentrate on his death bowling skills to have any chance of being in the playing 11 for the WC. Pandya brothers have a good solid 8 overs between them. Pant will have his chances to prove his critics wrong and there need not be any worry about the Indian top-order when they are playing in their home.

With only 7 odd games before the T20 world cup, the team would search for players who can fit perfectly into this format. Apart from Miller and De Kock, the team lacks power hitting from their batsman. Bavuma was impressive in his 43-ball 49 but he is more suited to the other two formats. Raw pace is not going to trouble Indian players in the sub-continent pitches and their extras are not going to help team’s cause. Shamsi looked good in his three overs but looked far from threatening. Phehlukwayo was impressive in his 20/1 in three overs and the management should try sending him up the order to have any total more than 200.

The Rain hampered most of the matches held here during the Karnataka Premier League and chances of rain visiting again looms large.
The average score in the concluded KPL on this venue is 155.
Records favor chasing as 8 matches in the concluded KPL has won by the team chasing.
The Proteas would hope that this doesn’t turn out to be a lopsided series and they need a miracle to make that to reality. India teams look is great form and would be a nightmare for South Africa in this long tour.
