India and Sri Lanka to lock horns in the first Twenty-20 match of the series in the new year 2020 at Guwahati, India.
India will defeat Sri Lanka and take 1-0 lead in the T20 series!
T&Cs apply, 18+
This is the first T20 match of the year for the subcontinent's neighbors - India and Sri Lanka. After the drawn T20 series with South Africa this year, India has two T20 back to back T20 series wins, as they defeated Bangladesh (2-1) and then West Indies (2-1). Virat Kohli and his boys looked solid to defeat West Indies in both formats of white-ball series.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, was exceptional to defeat Pakistan (3-0) in the three-T20 series, however, their next visit to Australia was futile as they faced the clean-sweep there. With Indian opener, Rohit Sharma rested, the visiting team's bowlers may get some respite, while Bumrah’s return could become a concerning point for their batsmen.

Good news for team India and the fans of Jasprit Bumrah is that he is making a comeback with this series against Sri Lanka. However, India opener and hit-man Rohit Sharma is not part of the squad, as he is rested. In Sharma’s absence, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul would open for the team India.
Under Virat Kohli, the team is doing a great job. With the recent T20 and ODI series win against West Indies, the team’s morale is already high, while Bumrah’s return will make a huge impact as he is the key bowler and can produce striking deliveries in the death overs. Shardul Thakur is likely to find his place in the playing XI, as he would look to play a significant role.
In recent few T20Is, Virat Kohli (323 runs in 6 T20Is, average 107.66, strike rate 155.28) has been the top-scorer for India, followed by KL Rahul (259 runs in 7 matches, average 43.16, strike rate 137.76) while Yuzvendra Chahal has taken 6 wickets in previous 5 matches at the strike rate of 19.00.
Key Players: Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, Mohammed Shami
For the team management of Sri Lanka, series defeats are as much troubling as their players’ injuries. Pacer Nuwan Pradeep, who is out due to injury, has been replaced by Kasun Rajitha. Shehan Jayasuriya is not part of the squad too, while allrounder Dhananjaya de Silva and Angelo Mathews are included. If Mathews plays in the first T20, it will be his first appearance in a T20I match in 16 months. The last time he played in T20s was in August 2018, though he has been a regular player in Tests and T20Is for Sri Lanka over the last year or so. This may be intended to strengthen the batting side, as the side averaged just over 119 runs per innings in their preceding tour of Australia.
In last few T20Is, Danushka Gunathilaka (142 runs in 6 T20Is, strike rate 121.36) has been the top-scorer, followed by Niroshan Dickwella (139 runs in 6 matches, strike rate 144.79) while Wanindu Hasaranga leads the bowling unit with 12 wickets in last 8 games, followed by Malinga (9 wickets in 7 matches).
Key Players - Lasith Malinga, Danushka Gunathilaka, Wanindu Hasaranga
On Sunday, the weather will be moderate or heavy rain shower with the daytime temperature reaching 23°c and nighttime minimum temperature are expected to dip to 13°c. Precipitation of around 3.3 mm, cloud covering 56% of the sky, with the humidity around 80% is predicted.
The match is scheduled at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati.
There is only one T20I match played here, between India and Australia in October 2017, which Australia won by 8 wickets while chasing 119. The surface looks good for batting. Considering dew factor and the chances of rain, the team winning the toss may field first.
India kick-off this tournament after their series-wins over West Indies in ODIs and T20Is. Although ranked 5, the Indian team is much sorted, solid and balanced compared to Sri Lanka, who arrive in India for this T20 series after their whitewashed series in Australia. Defeating India in India is always a daunting task and looking at the current Sri Lankan side, who is number 7 in ICC ranking, seems less likely.
India will defeat Sri Lanka and take 1-0 lead in the T20 series!
