At the time of writing this article, Malaysia and Qatar have two points each, as they both won 1 match win and lost 1. However, Malaysia is at the second position in the points table with net-run-rate of 1.091, while Qatar is fourth with NRR -0.658. Qatar lost to hosts Singapore, but their victory over regional powerhouse Nepal kept their qualification hopes alive. On the other hand, Malaysia started with a win versus Kuwait, but they could not defy Nepal’s attacking batting performance in their rain-affected second match. It is going to be an interesting clash between the teams trying hard to qualify and make an impact at the international level.

Malaysia’s recent performances in the 50-over games versus some of the Asian oppositions have been remarkable. Before losing 2 match series to Nepal (0-2), they defeated Maldives and Thailand in the Tri-Nation T20I Series played at Kuala Lumpur and remained at the top of the table.
They won their opening game of this tournament against Kuwait by 42 runs. Their batsmen - Syed Aziz (34 runs), Shafiq Sharif (38 runs) and Aminuddin Ramly (32 runs) powered the team to post the total of 162 runs. Muhamad Syahadat (3 for 33) was exuberant in blocking Kuwait’s run-chase while Syed Aziz, Pavandeep Singh, and Fitri Sham grabbed 6 wickets among themselves.
They were unlucky in the second match to lose against Nepal despite scoring 83 runs in 9 overs batting first. Syed Aziz’s sparkling inning of 15 balls 30 and Virandeep Singh’s inning of 21 runs established them in a very good position to win the match. Yet, the bowlers proved to be helpless against Nepal’s aggressive run-chase.
Surprisingly the side lost their last match to Singapore by 8 wickets.
Ahmad Faiz Mohammad Noor (c), Shafiq Sharif (wk), Virandeep Singh, Anwar Rahman, Anwar Arudin, Fitri Sham, Syed Aziz Syed Mubarak, Pavandeep Singh, Aminuddin Ramly, Muhamad Syahadat, S Muniandy
Qatar played their first Twenty20 International match in January 2019, in which they defeated Saudi Arabia by 4 wickets, in ACC Western Region T20. They reached to the final of the tournament after winning all the group-stage matches. In the final, Qatar posted a total of 157 against Saudi Arabia, but they lost it by 8 wickets.
Qatar went down in their first match of the tournament against hosts Singapore. Their bowlers conceded too many runs in the match. Except for Inam-ul-Haq, all the bowlers gave away more than 8 runs per over. Iqbal Hussain took 4 wickets but conceded 33 runs in his four overs. The target of 187 proved to be too much for their batsmen. Only skipper Tamoor Sajjad (34 runs) and Mohammed Rizlan (33 runs) crossed 30, eventually, they lost the match by 33 runs.
The bowlers bounced back in the second game as they destroyed Nepal’s batting line-up. They bowled out Nepal in 122 runs, thanks to splendid bowling by Iqbal Hussain (3 for 21) and Tamoor Sajjad (2 for 14). Opening batsman Inam-ul-Haq (41 runs in 32 balls) played the pivotal role in the run-chase, while Mohammed Rizlan and Nouman Sawar kept their cool to ensure Qatar could cross the finishing line in 19.2 overs.
Muhammad Tanveer is the to scorer for Qatar with 299 runs in past 10 innings, followed by Faisal Javed (240 runs). Iqbal Hussain (17 wickets) and Tamoor Sajjad (13 wickets) are the leading wicket-takers for Qatar.
In their third match against Kuwait played on 26th July, Qatar lost by 10 runs.
Tamoor Sajjad (c), Faisal Javed, Inam-ul-Haq, Kamran Khan, Muhammad Tanveer, Zaheer Ibrahim, Mohammed Rizlan (wk), Nouman Sarwar, Awais Malik, Iqbal Hussain, Mohammed Nadeem
The venue for this match is Indian Association Ground, Singapore. Out of 5 T20 International matches played on this ground, the teams batting first have won twice, and two times the teams batting second have won, while one match was washed-out.
In full 20 overs games, highest and lowest scores on this ground are 186/7 (by Qatar vs Qatar) and 120 (by Kuwait against Malaysia) respectively. Batting first on this ground yielded better scores than batting second, hence the team winning the toss should opt to bat first.
Qatar has played a few more T20I games than Malaysia, also they have a higher ranking in the ICC list compared to Malaysia. Qatar has given a strong message by defeating ICC rank 11 team Nepal, on the other hand, Malaysia could never win a single match against Nepal in their 3 encounters so far. While Malaysia’s batting seems to rely heavily on Syed Aziz, Qatar seem to have better combinations of key batsmen and bowlers.
We predict Qatar would defeat Malaysia in this match.
