Melbourne Renegades Women have really sprung a late surprise in the WBBL 2019-20. After registering two back-to-back solid wins, they are now in the 4th position of the points table with 7 wins and 6 losses and a Net Run Rate of +0.017. With 14 points in the kitty and a healthy run rate, the Renegades now have a real chance of making it to the semis if they clinch their final game of the season against the struggling Sydney Thunder Women. Jessica Duffin has been leading the team with aplomb and it appears that the Renegades Women might well be the dark horses of the season.
Meanwhile, Sydney Thunder Women have nothing but pride to play for. They are out of the semi-final race and are placed 6th on the points table with 5 wins and 7 losses and a Net Run Rate of-0.406. They have been highly inconsistent this season and have hence paid the price for it. Against a red hot Renegades Women at home, their chances are limited.

Melbourne Renegades Women will be flying high on confidence after their two back-to-back victories while chasing stiff targets. Their batting unit has really come through for the team and is looking in terrific touch. Captain Jessica Duffin has led from the front and is the leading scorer of the team with 447 runs in 12 matches at 74.50. Even in the last match against the Melbourne Stars Women, when the openers failed in a chase of 163, it was Duffin's unbeaten 76 off 57 balls that took the team safely home.
Opener Danielle Wyatt is the other consistent performer of the team and has already amassed 424 runs with 4 fifties. Tammy Beaumont and Courtney Webb have been steadily holding the middle-order together. Opener Anna Lanning has failed in the last two matches but her 73 against Stars Women earlier last week showed that she can take the game away from the opposition.
In the bowling department too, Renegades Women have delivered mostly. Molly Strano(17 wickets) and Maitlan Brown (16 wickets) have been hunting as a pack and have been regularly taking wickets. With good support from Lea Tahuhu, the team has some good options in the bowling department.

Sydney Thunder Women did win their last game against Melbourne Stars Women. But that was their 1st win in the last 7 games and the chances of them going on a victory-spree right now look remote. With an inconsistent batting and bowling unit, Sydney Thunder have been unable to establish their place this season.
In the batting department, Sydney Thunder Women have been primarily dependent on three batters. Alex Blackwell (316 runs), opener Rachel Priest (277 runs) and Phoebe Litchfield (178 runs) have been the leading run-scorers for the team this season. The squad will rely on them to do the bulk of the scoring against the Renegades Women. Naomi Stalenberg has been getting starts as an opener and will be eager to finish off on a high. The problem though is that Sydney Thunder Women has managed only 4 fifty-plus scores this season and two of them have come from their star batter Alex Blackwell. Their batting unit cannot be relied upon.
Their bowling has been marginally better with almost all the bowlers being among the wickets. Seamer Hannah Darlington (14 wickets) and Pakistani off-spinner Nida Dar (13 wickets) have been their lead performers. However, since Nadia has left for national duties this further dents the team's bowling and their chances for this game. Rene Farrell, Samantha Bates and Shabnim Ismail have chipped in too every now and then, will have to take a lot of responsibility. Captain Rachael Haynes, who has had a poor season, will be praying that her bowling unit really manages to stop the strong Renegades batting lineup.

The pitch at the Junction Oval in Melbourne stays true throughout the 40 overs. The surface has been good for batting and the seamers enjoy the first few overs of bowling. A total of 160 by the team batting first might not be enough as the ball will come nicely on to the bat till the end. There are showers expected on the day of the match and hence we can have a rain-curtailed game. If the showers are persistent, then batting will become tougher on a moist pitch.
The Junction Oval in Melbourne has provided some excellent contests. If the rains stay away, then we can expect a high-scoring match with scores of 160-odd by both the teams.
In the 2019-20 season if the WBBL 7 of the 9 matches played at the Junction Oval in Melbourne have been won by the team batting second. The team winning the toss is hence likely to bowl first.
Melbourne Renegades Women have really found their rhythm and are suddenly looking like a dangerous team. The way their batting unit has come together to chase down stiff totals is a scary prospect for the other teams. Playing at home, they certainly start as favorites against a struggling and inconsistent Sydney Thunder Women. Only an outstanding bowling performance can help them stop the red hot Renegades Women batting charge. A rain-curtailed match might give us a close contest but back Melbourne Renegades Women to win this contest and affirm their claim for the final four spot.
