T&Cs apply, 18+
The defending champions Madurai Panthers would face VB Kanchi Veerans in the first eliminator of TNPL 2019 as the 3rd and 4th team respectively at the India Cements Company Ground, Tirunelveli on Sunday. The winner of this match will have to beat the loser of the first qualifier for a shot at the TNPL final. It’s a do or die match for both the teams.
Both teams know a thing or two about comeback this season. Defending champions Madurai Panthers came back after two consecutive defeats to win the super-over thriller against Trichy Warriors. They have been undefeated since then with 4 consecutive wins. After winning 3 of the first 4 matches, VB Kanchi Veernas lost a couple of crucial matches and were on the verge of elimination. But they managed to hold their nerves in the last league game to qualify for the playoffs.
It will be interesting to see whether Madurai Panthers continue the winning run or whether Kanchi Veerans could stop them.

Madurai Panthers would be banking on their current winning streak, which is at 4 consecutive wins right now, to push further for a place in the final. And thus, to have the chance to defend their title they won against Dindigul Dragons last season in 2018.
After a couple of defeats early in the season, including the one against the current opponent Kanchi Veerans, many must have had written off Madurai Panthers to defend the title this year. But they held their nerve to steal a low scoring super over thriller and since then under the proficient leadership of Arun Karthik, they never looked back.
Captain Arun Karthik led from the front and he is the 3rd highest run-scorer of the tournament so far with 281 in 7 innings with a century. To put his performance in perspective, Kousik J with 129 runs is the second-highest run-getter for Madurai Panthers. Kiran Akash is the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 14 wickets in 7 matches. Madurai Panthers would expect another match-winning performance from these two to lead them one step closer to the Finals.

The Kanchi Veerans just about held on to qualify for the playoffs by winning the last game of the season by 7 wickets against Trichy Warriors. It was a clinical performance first with the ball to restrict Trichy to an under-par 121 and then getting there with ease losing just 3 wickets. However, the fact that it came down to a do die situation in the league game to qualify for playoffs suggests a tough league stage for the Kanchi Veerans.
They have had an interesting season thus far. Wins were with huge margins and so were the losses. A couple of 7 wicket wins to go along with 110 and 58 run wins suggest a strong outfit. However, a defeat by 8 wickets, 7 wickets and another one by 61 runs shows how comprehensive the result has been on either side for Kanchi Veerans. This inconsistency resulted in none of the players featuring in the top 5 batsmen of bowlers this season. Their top batsman Baba Aparajith is 7th in the list whereas their top bowler Gowtham has just 8 wickets to his name.
Kanchi Veernas would take some heart from the fact that they beat Madurai Panthers in the league game this year. However, inconsistency in their performance means they do not start the eliminator as the favorites.

The conditions at Tirunelveli seem to be batting friendly. The true nature of the pitch makes the batsmen play their shots without worrying too much about swing or bounce. The average score at this venue is 162.
The teams winning the toss would want to bat first here to capitalize on the flat conditions early on and would hope that conditions deteriorate a tad bit in the second half. We anticipate the team winning toss will look to bat first.
Defending champions versus a team that is trying to get to their maiden TNPL finals. This is also the first time VB Kanchi Veerans have qualified for the playoffs in TNPL. Their unpredictable nature throughout the tournament could mean a thriller in the first eliminator or just an easy win for Madurai Panthers. The consistency of Madurai Panthers and experience of being there and done that tilts the odds in their favor a bit.
Thus, we predict that the defending champions Madurai Panthers to win the eliminator against Kanchi Veerans on Sunday.
