Lyca Kovai Kings are in a decent position in this edition of the TNPL, as they have got four points in 4 matches, the same as Madurai Panthers in the equal number of matches. As Madurai have a better net run rate SMP’s (+0.286 against LKK’s +0.068), they are one place above Kovai Kings in the points table.
Including all previous seasons and current year’s matches, they have won 15 out of 25 matches. Madurai could not win a single match in first two seasons of the TNPL but last year they won 5 out of 7 league matches and eventually lifted the trophy by beating Dindigul Dragons. SMP has won a total of 9 out of 14 outings since the beginning of TNPL 2018. A win here is essential for both the sides from the playoffs’ perspective.

Lyca Kovai Kings reached in the semi-final of TNPL 2016 after securing 8 points in the league stage, while in 2017 they managed to enter the playoffs thanks to two abandoned matches. They defeated Karaikudi Kaalai in the Eliminator, by 4 wickets, but then lost to Chepauk Super Gillies in the Qualifier 2. In 2018 edition, they again reached the playoffs by securing 3rd place in the points table. But, they lost again in the Second Qualifier to Madurai Panthers.
This year, the Kings began their campaign with a terrific win over VB Kanchi Veerans. T Natarajan (2 for 21) and S Manigandan (3 for 40) were the pick of the bowlers while Abhinav Mukund (70* off 44) and Shahrukh Khan (21 balls 40) ensured the victory by 8 wickets while chasing 151 runs. They lost to TUTI Patriots in the second game by just 6 runs. Their second win was against Ruby Trichy Warriors, in which they had scored 161 runs, powered by Antony Dhas’s sparkling 13 balls 32 lower down the order. He also took 1 wicket for 15 runs in 3 overs and got awarded as the Player of the Match. Against Chepauk Super Gillies in the previous game, their middle-order collapse cost them the game as they could score just 115 runs, which was chased down by the Gillies comfortably by 9 wickets and 39 balls remaining.
Antony Dhas has been the top performer for LKK with the bat as well as the ball. He scored 99 runs in 3 innings, including 1 half-century at the strike rate of 202.04. Also, he has taken 5 wickets in the last 4 matches. Abhinav Mukund (97 runs in 4 innings 1 half-century, the strike rate of 116.87) is the second-highest run-scorer for LKK. T Natarajan is the leading wicket-taker for LKK with 6 wickets in past 4 innings with an economy rate of 5.02.

The defending champions are gaining some momentum after their second win in the previous game against Ruby Trichy Warriors. The two losses before this win had placed the team in a tricky state. However, the super-over win against RTW must have injected the doses of confidence and self-belief in their players. Rahil Shah (2 for 17) and Kiran Akash (2 for 33) restricted Ruby Trichy Warriors to 142 runs despite Murali Vijay’s 78 runs innings. Arun Karthik (26 balls 46) and Jagatheesan Kousik (35 runs in 33 balls) led the match to the super-over after leveling RTW’s score of 142. Abhishek Tanwar single-handedly won the match for SMP in the super-over, as he smashed two sixes to give RTW the challenge of 13 runs. Tanwar then got Murali Vijay and Mani Bharathi out, giving away just 3 runs in the over, leading the team to the much-needed victory.
The Panthers had won their first game by 9 wickets, chasing down TUTI Patriots’ 124, thanks to Arun Karthik’s 42 balls 65. Earlier, L Kiran Akash and R Mithun shared 6 wickets among themselves to restrict Patriots under 125. Against Dindigul Dragons in the second game, except RS Shah (3 wickets for 21), all other bowlers conceded more than 8 runs per over and allowed Dragons to cross 180 runs. With none of their batsmen crossing 30, they failed in the run-chase and eventually lost the match by 30 runs. Against Kanchi Veerans, they managed to post the total of 139 runs on the board. Shijit Chandran made 39 off 36 but failed to get enough support from others. The Veerans achieved the target without any challenge.
With one half-century, Arun Karthik has scored maximum runs (136 runs in 4 matches) for SMP in the tournament, at an average of 45.33 and strike rate of 146.24. Kiran Akash (8 wickets in 4 games) is Madurai’s top wicket-taking bowler.

The venue for this match is NPR college Ground, Dindigul. Out of 39 T20 domestic games played on this ground, 15 matches are won by the teams batting first while 24 times the teams batting second have won.
