Lyca Kovai Kings reached in the semi-final of TNPL 2016 after securing 8 points in the league stage, while in 2017 they managed to enter the playoffs thanks to two abandoned matches. They defeated Karaikudi Kaalai in the Eliminator, by 4 wickets, but then lost to Chepauk Super Gillies in the Qualifier 2. In 2018 edition, they again reached the playoffs by securing 3rd place in the points table. But, they lost again in the Second Qualifier to Madurai Panthers.

This year, the Kings began their campaign with a terrific win over VB Kanchi Veerans. T Natarajan (2 for 21) and S Manigandan (3 for 40) were the pick of the bowlers while Abhinav Mukund (70* off 44) and Shahrukh Khan (21 balls 40) ensured the victory by 8 wickets while chasing 151 runs. They lost to TUTI Patriots in the second game by just 6 runs. Their second win was against Ruby Trichy Warriors, in which they had scored 161 runs, powered by Antony Dhas’s sparkling 13 balls 32 lower down the order. He also took 1 wicket for 15 runs in 3 overs and got awarded as the Player of the Match. Against Chepauk Super Gillies in the previous game, their middle-order collapse cost them the game as they could score just 115 runs, which was chased down by the Gillies comfortably by 9 wickets and 39 balls remaining.

The defending champions are gaining some momentum after their second win in the previous game against Ruby Trichy Warriors. The two losses before this win had placed the team in a tricky state. However, the super-over win against RTW must have injected the doses of confidence and self-belief in their players. Rahil Shah (2 for 17) and Kiran Akash (2 for 33) restricted Ruby Trichy Warriors to 142 runs despite Murali Vijay’s 78 runs innings. Against Dindigul Dragons in the second game, except RS Shah (3 wickets for 21), all other bowlers conceded more than 8 runs per over and allowed Dragons to cross 180 runs. With none of their batsmen crossing 30, they failed in the run-chase and eventually lost the match by 30 runs. Against Kanchi Veerans, they managed to post the total of 139 runs on the board. Shijit Chandran made 39 off 36 but failed to get enough support from others. The Veerans achieved the target without any challenge.
