After a successful white-ball series that the two sides contested in Pakistan, a two-Test series is organized at Rawalpindi and Karachi, to end the decade-long drought of test cricket in Pakistan. The last Test match played in Pakistan was back in 2009, during which terror attack occurred on the Sri Lankan team bus, after which the other national teams avoided visiting Pakistan due to obvious security reasons, especially the Test matches in Pakistan were completely shunned.
The new Head Coach of Sri Lanka, Mickey Arthur, won’t be present in Pakistan for this series, although he will be keenly watching. Lahiru Kumara may replace Suranga Lakmal who is left out due to health reasons in the starting eleven for the first Test.
With this Test series, Pakistan aim to establish their reputation of being as safe and secure as any other country in the world.

Exceptional performances at Pakistan's premier first-class competition have enabled selectors to recall Pakistan’s experienced batsman Fawad Alam. He scored 3105 runs in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy at an average of 56.45. With Fawad‘s recall, it appears that the team management wants to alter the approach of fielding more youngsters, which actually backfired in Australia.
In the previous Test series in Australia, Babar Azam (210 runs with 1 century and 1 half-century) was the most successful batsman for Pakistan, while Shaheen Afridi with 5 wickets was the leading wicket-taker. Yasir Shah (194 runs including 1 century, and 4 wickets) was impressive too. Babar Azam has been in very good touch for quite some time now as he scored 829 runs in the last 10 matches, while Asad Shafiq is not too behind, with 697 runs in the last 10 matches.
Leg-breaker Yasir Shah (42 wickets in the last 9 matches) is the key bowler for Pakistan.

Sri Lanka faced a huge blow just before leaving for Pakistan as Suranga Lakmal was down with dengue fever, only to be replaced by emerging player Asitha Fernando. Lakmal has been the team's prime pacer in Test cricket, especially in overseas conditions. However, it is less likely that Fernando would get the place in playing eleven in the first test match.
The visitor's fast bowling unit comprises of Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, and Kasun Rajitha.
Dimuth Karunaratne (247 runs in the last 4 innings, including 1 century and 1 half-century) has been remarkable in the previous Test series against New Zealand, which resulted in a draw. Dhananjaya de Silva also smashed a century against New Zealand at Colombo in the second Test. Karunaratne is the key to Sri Lanka’s success. He was also the leading run-scorer from both sides when the two teams clashed in 2017 at UAE.

Out of 8 tests played here, five were won by the teams batting first, two matches were drawn and just 1 match was won by the chasing team. The team winning the toss should opt to bat first.
Pakistan is right now at the 8th place in the ICC Test rankings, while Sri Lanka is at the sixth place. The two sides meeting in Pakistan after a decade in the longest format of the game, however, they played a test series in UAE in 2017, in which Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan 2-0.
Overall, the teams played 53 tests out of which Pakistan won 19, lost 16 and 18 matches were drawn. Pakistan is playing at home and beating them would not be an easy task, however, based on the recent forms of the players from both the teams and the team balance, Sri Lanka at the moment seem to have an upper hand.
