After facing much frustration through most of the season, the Tshwane Spartans finally got their chance to shine as they defeated Nelson Mandela Bay Giants in the Eliminator by 27 runs to enter the finals of the Mzansi Super League 2019. They will now be clashing with Paarl Rocks in the all-important final on Sunday at Paarl.
Tshwane Spartans, despite playing superbly, had ended 3rd on the points table as 5 of their league matches had been abandoned due to rain. They have entered the finals with a flourish and would be confident of making a statement.
Paarl Rocks ended as the No.1 team on the points table and playing the finals at home, they will certainly have an edge. We are thus in for an absolute cracker of a contest as two very strong sides battle it out one final time for the trophy.

Paarl Rocks were definitely the best team in the league stage apart from Nelson Mandela Bay Giants. They won 6 matches and lost just 3. Faf du Plessis’s side is pretty well-balanced and has most bases covered. One thing that might be concerning them, however, is their form against Tshwane Spartans – they were thumped by the Spartans by 8 wickets in the league stage.
Regardless, Paarl Rocks have a stable batting unit where contributions have come from almost all the batsmen. Opener Cameron Delport (246 runs) and middle-order batsman James Vince (226 runs) have done the bulk of the scoring. Captain Faf du Plessis (216 runs) has done a decent job too. But most of the others haven’t been consistent enough. Paarl’s batting, while being solid, isn’t dangerous enough.
The team’s bowling has been very good as well. The likes of Bjorn Fortuin (8 wickets), Isuru Udana(8 wickets) and Ferisco Adams (6 wickets) have been among the wickets. However, it is leg-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi who has made the real difference for Paarl with 14 wickets already. These 4 bowlers have been economical and have consistently applied pressure on the opposition. It will be fascinating to see how they deal with the Spartans in the final.

Tshwane Spartans would be brimming in confidence as they get ready to play the finals on Sunday. They have had a frustrating season as more than half of their matches were washed out. But they didn’t give up and made the best of whatever opportunities they got. They played superbly as a unit in the Eliminator and would be hoping to repeat the show in the final.
In AB de Villiers, the Spartans have a superstar. De Villiers has been in excellent form in the season and has already amassed 274 runs with 3 fifties. Dean Elgar (194 runs) and Petrus van Biljon (173 runs) have been the other two run-getters for the team. Captain Heinrich Klaasen hasn’t got going this season but he explodes in the final, then the Spartans would be unstoppable.
Their bowling has been led by experienced fast bowler Morne Morkel (12) while the others like Imran Manack, David Wiese and spinner Roelof van der Merwe have regularly contributed. The team has a potent bowling force and has the potential to halt the best.

The pitch at Boland Bank Park in Paarl is a good one for batting. It generates good bounce and the ball comes nicely on to the bat initially. The seamers and spin bowlers will also get purchase from the wicket if they use their variations well.
The weather at Paarl on the day of the match is expected to be partly cloudy and it should be pleasant for playing cricket.
There has not been a T20I played at Boland Park in Paarl but it has produced some high-scoring ODI encounters. The highest ODI total achieved here is 353-6 by South Africa against Bangladesh in 2017. The first match that was played in the stadium was between India and Zimbabwe in January 1997. Interestingly, the game ended in a tie.
The team winning the toss is likely to bat first as this is a final. In a high-pressure game, it would be ideal to bat first and then put the pressure on the opposition with a big score.
There have been 4 matches played between Paarl Rocks and Tshwane Spartans in the Mzansi Super League and all 4 have been won by Tshwane Spartans. This does give an indication that the Spartans have enjoyed an edge over the Paarl Rocks side. Whether they will continue their winning streak against them in the finals will be interesting to see.
Playing at home, Paarl Rocks will certainly have a bigger advantage. That being said, Tshwane Spartans are looking in better shape and have match-winners in both the departments. Furthermore, the form of AB de Villiers puts them slightly ahead of Paarl Rocks in this big game.
This will be a closely contested game as both the teams are almost evenly matched. However, looking at the collective strength and rhythm of Tshwane Spartans along with their great form against Paarl Rocks, they should be backed as the winners of this match.
