South Africa’s challenge to make a comeback in the 3rd Test!
England to win this game!
T&Cs apply, 18+
England made a strong comeback in the 2nd Test Match at Cape Town winning it by 189 runs after they had gone down in the 1st Test at Centurion. With the scores leveled 1-1 the Test Series has become interesting as the sides play the 3rd Test at Port Elizabeth. The series has so far oscillated between the two sides and in both the Test Matches so far we have seen competitive cricket. England had come to South Africa as favorites to win their first Test Series here since South Africa’s readmission is now looking very confident after their impressive win in the last game.
As for the hosts, their poor form with the bat continues in 5-day cricket. They have lost six out of their last seven games and it is their batting that has let them down on most occasions. The hosts will have to make a strong comeback in the next game after yielding the momentum to the visitors.

Faf du Plessis would have few clues on how to instill confidence in his side. Just when they seemed to have returned to form after the 1st Test Match they let themselves down in the last one. The same problems of batting collapses have been repeating for the side game after the game. The skipper would want his players to believe in their skills as they play a side that has done well in away game over the last couple of years. Pieter Malan who replaced Aiden Markram in the last game did well in the last game and Dean Elgar too played his part.
The main problem for the side has been the form of skipper du Plessis, Zubayr Hamza and Rassie van der Dussen who haven’t played their part well in the series so far. Quinton de Kock has done well and will have to build partnerships with the likes of Vernon Philander and Dwaine Pretorius down the order. As far as their bowling goes Kagiso Rabada has surely been the go to man for the South African skipper. Anrich Nortje and Philander have occasionally played their part well in the two games so far. Keshav Maharaj had a bad outing in the last game and the spin department is one area where the team looks weak. The bowlers will have to put in the extra effort given the form their batsmen are in at the moment.

Joe Root would have been extremely happy with the way his side played in the last game. They had thrown away the opportunity in the first game but made a strong recovery in the last one. Having already smelled blood and knowing the poor phase the hosts are going through at the moment, Root would want to take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the next game. Dominic Sibley did well in the last game scoring a second-innings ton and would look forward to providing the side with a good start in the company of Zak Crawley who failed to convert his start. They have good strength in the middle order where Joe Denly, Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope did well in the last game.
With Jos Buttler and Sam Curran down the order the side bats deep in what is one of their biggest strengths. James Anderson the hero of the last game will be missed as he is unlikely to play due to his injury. Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes will have to provide the side with a good start with the new ball. Woakes who will play his first game in the series must bowl in the right areas. Stokes did well in the last game and along with Curran and Dominic Bess completes a good bowling attack for the side.

The weather forecast for the game doesn’t look good for the first three days when we expect to see overcast skies and rains. Batting will be a challenge on this surface initially as it is known to offer bounce and movement to the fast bowlers. The surface would ease as the game progress making it easy for the batsmen. We might have another of those 4 day finishes given the grass on the surface.
St George's Park, Port Elizabeth is a typical South African ground where the fast bowlers enjoy bowling with the new ball. Batsmen have to be very careful on this surface and play to the merit of the ball. Once they get their eyes in they can score runs. Like other South African wickets there isn’t much for the spinners on this surface.
The weather would be cloudy at the start of the game which is expected to make batting difficult. The grass on the surface will make it tough for the batsmen here and hence we expect the skipper winning the toss to invite the opposition into bat in the game.
It has been a competitive series so far. The South Africans surprised everyone and perhaps even themselves to win the first game after looking in bad shape at the start of the game. The English side bounced back well in the last game to level the series.
The next game would be an important one as the winner will take an unassailable lead in the series. It is a close call but England thanks to their stronger batting line-up will start favorites in this game.
