The 39th game of the World Cup at Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street between Sri Lanka and West Indies would be an important one for the Sri Lankan side. They still have a remote hope for making it to the semi-finals but need to win this game by a big margin. The tournament is over for the West Indian side which hasn’t been able to live up to the promise it generated before the start of the tournament.
The Sri Lankan team hasn’t managed to put up much of a fight barring the game they won against England. Their only other victory came against the Afghanistan side. West Indies, on the other hand, have allowed momentum to slip from their hands and would be eager to win this one and make a mark and offer something to their fans.

Dimuth Karunaratne’s side showed hopes in their game against England but they hit the rock bottom in their last game against the South Africans. The same story of batting collapse unfolded in the last game. With this loss, the chances for the team qualifying for the semi-finals have taken a hit. They are still in with a chance and shall need to win the upcoming game by a big margin.
The batting for the side has been a story of pain and agony. Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera have done well at the top through the skipper missed out in the last game. Avishka Fernando has taken on the bowlers but the rest of the batsmen including Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva in the middle overs haven't done well. The team would need a better performance from them if they are to win the next game.
Bowling performance for the side was poor in the last game as they managed to take only one wicket. Lasith Malinga the veteran has looked good and so have Dhananjaya de Silva and Isuru Udana. But the side would be looking at Suranga Lakmal and Thisara Perera to do well in the middle overs against a hard-hitting West Indian batting line-up.

Jason Holder’s team showed great promise in the first game defeating Pakistan and hasn’t won a game since then. They have lost some key matches where they were in a comfortable position. They were outplayed by India in all departments in the last game which ended their hopes of making it through to the next round of the tournament. The side would look to play for some pride and sign off from the tournament on a high.
It was a batting collapse for the side in the last game against India and they would be hoping to overcome this in the next game. Chris Gayle and Shai Hope have had their good times in the tournament and shall be looking to do well in the next game. Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer and Jason Holder form a good batting line-up and they would be eager to leave with some happy memories. Carlos Brathwaite towards the end can score runs quickly as he has already shown.
The bowling attack has done well especially Sheldon Cottrell and Oshane Thomas. The two have troubled the batsmen regularly. Kemar Roach also did well in the last game which was his first in the tournament. Jason Holder hasn’t lived up to his reputation and the side would expect him and Fabian Allen to do well in the next game.

It is expected to be cloudy with a thick cover at Chester-le-Street on July 01. The ball would do a lot in the early overs when there is juice on the surface. We have already seen in the last game where batting is difficult in the first innings and the side that bats first should feel comfortable with a score around 270 runs.
VENUE
A small ground Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street is a place that has seen several high scoring encounters when conditions have been conducive to batting. Batsmen can hit the ball over the ropes easily along the square. Fast bowlers also get a good bargain out of the surface in the early overs of the game.
In the last game played at this venue, batting was difficult in the first innings. The heavy weather conditions would make it even tougher in the next game. We expected the captain winning the toss to have no hesitation in bowling first on this surface and restricting the opponents.
West Indies are already out of the tournament while the Sri Lankan team is still with a chance. The campaign hasn’t gone as per plans for both the sides in the tournament. While Sri Lanka sits higher on the points table compared to the West Indies it is the latter side that has looked better in the competition. They were a bit unlucky to have lost a few games that would have gone their way. Going by the composition of the two sides we expect the West Indies to start as favorites in the next game.
