After seven weeks of non-stop T20 cricket and 60 highly exciting games, we have our two finalists for the 2018-19 season of the Big Bash League. Sydney Sixers who won the title back in 2011-12 would take on Melbourne Stars at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The Stars are yet to lay their hands on the title and would be aiming to end that drought after losing in two finals in the 2015-16 and 2018-19 seasons. Both the sides have played high-quality cricket and had finished No. 1 and 2 after the league stage. The two sides had met thrice earlier in the tournament – twice in the league stage and once in the Qualifier and the Sixers had won two of these games.
While the Sixers have a very good bowling unit Stars’ batsmen have done well throughout the season. It will be a clash of titans at the famed SCG and we expect it to be an exciting contest between the bat and the ball.

Moises Henriques’ side has peaked at the right time in the league. They had a wonderful run at the start and after few hiccups got their act together. They qualified for the finals through the Qualifier and have won their last four games. Playing at home and having done well against the Stars the side will start confidently in this game. James Vince and Josh Phillippe have provided good starts to the side and they will look in good form at the moment. Steven Smith’s entry into the side had strengthened their batting.
In Daniel Hughes, Jordan Silk and Henriques they have good hitters of the ball down the order and these three will look to finish the innings in style. Sean Abbott also brings good hitting skills lower down the order. As far as their bowling is concerned Sean Abbott and Josh Hazlewood will need to get early breakthroughs. Abbott has looked in great form in recent games. Ben Dwarshuis and Steve O’Keefe also did well in the last game. With the experience of Nathan Lyon on a turning Sydney track, they definitely have a good bowling attack going into this game.
It was finally an end to the poor run Glenn Maxwell’s side had in the business end of the season. In a do or die Challenger game against Sydney Thunder the league stage table toppers registered an impressive 28 run victory. With their batsmen making a strong comeback the side will look to play well and claim their first title in the history of the league. Marcus Stoinis with close to 700 runs is in the form of his life and looks to provide a good start with Nic Maddinson. Nick Larkin after his good show in the last game would be very confident. Glenn Maxwell has done well in earlier games and is a threat to the opponents.
Peter Handscomb, Seb Gotch and Nathan Coulter-Nile add punch to the batting line-up down the order. Their bowling attack hasn’t looked in best of form and this is one area they will have to fix ahead of the big game. Haris Rauf and Adam Zampa have done well but other bowlers have gone for runs. The likes of Clint Hinchliffe, Maxwell and Nathan Coulter-Nile will need to check their line and length as they have gone for plenty of runs in the last four games.

Weatherman doesn’t have the best of news. Heavy showers are forecast for February 08 at Sydney and we may have to deal with a rain reduced game. The wicket has been a tough one to bat on this season and the two paced nature of the surface has created doubts in the minds of the batsmen. The side that bats first would be happy to get a score of 150-160 runs on this surface.
Sydney Cricket Ground is not the easiest surface to bat on and the batsmen have to get their eyes in before playing their strokes. Fast bowlers do get good bounce and carry from the surface. It is also the best wicket in Australia for the spinners where they get a sharp turn and bounce causing trouble for the batsmen.
The wicket at the Sydney Cricket Ground has been on the slower side and in most games we have seen teams opting to bowl first after winning the toss. With predictions for rain the side batting second would have an advantage. Going into the game we expect the side winning the toss to invite the opposition to bat first on this wicket.
The two teams have qualified for the finals in contrasting fashions. While the Sydney Sixers earned their spot in the final with a one sided win against Melbourne Stars in the Qualifier, the Stars have had to toil it hard in the last few games. They have looked out of form but did put things together in the Challenger against Sydney Thunder.
It will be a close contest between Stars’ batsmen and Sixers’ bowlers. The Stars have twice lost in the finals and this will play in their mind. Sydney Sixers playing at home and with a better spin attack would start as favorites in this game.
