This will be the battle of the low-ranked teams of the WBBL 2019-20. Both Sydney Thunder Women and Melbourne Stars Women have had a rather poor time in the ongoing season of the WBBL.
Sydney Thunder is placed 6th on the points table with 4 wins and 7 losses along with a Net Run Rate of -0.526. Melbourne Stars have fared worse and are right at the bottom of the table with only 2 victories and 9 losses along with a horrible Net Run Rate of -0.752. Melbourne Stars are already out of contention for the semi-final berth. Sydney Thunder has an outside chance but will need a near miracle for that to happen.
Sydney Thunder Women have now lost 6 games in a row after losing the one-over eliminator against Adelaide Strikers Women in their last game. Melbourne Stars Women won their last match against Melbourne Renegades Women to stop a 5-match losing spree. One can say that both the teams are almost equal in terms of form right now. However, when the two teams clashed earlier in the WBBL 2019-20 season, Sydney Thunder managed a comfortable win. Moreover, in the last 5 games between these two sides, Sydney Thunder Women has won 4 while one match was abandoned. Hence, the Sydney Thunder will have an edge in this contest.

Sydney Thunder Women's batting hasn't been consistent this season and barring a few performers they have mostly failed to work as a unit. Opener and wicket-keeper Rachel Priest has been their highest run-getter of the season with 265 runs in 11 matches. Following her closely is Alex Blackwell (251 runs in 11 matches) who had also scored a composed 45 when the two teams had last met. No other batswoman has scored more than 200 runs in the season so far for Sydney Thunder Women and there have only been 3 fifties scored by the entire batting unit. The other batting stars in this game could be Phoebe Litchfield (161 runs in 9 matches) and skipper Rachael Haynes.
Sydney Thunder's bowling has been better with 4 bowlers having picked 10 or more wickets. Seamer Hannah Darlington has been the most consistent performer for Sydney and has 13 wickets to her kitty so far. Her 3-29 against Adelaide Strikers Women was an excellent performance will keep her in good stead for the upcoming match. Pakistan's off-spinner Nida Dar (13 wickets) has also been excellent for Sydney Thunder and would eager to spin her web around Melbourne Stars Women. Seamer Shabnim Ismail (10 wickets) can have an impact in this game as well along with left-arm spinner Samantha Bates (11 wickets).

Melbourne Stars Women have had some quality batting performers this season. South Africa's Lizelle Lee has been the team's pillar this season. The opener has already amassed 389 runs in 11 matches with 3 fifties and an unbeaten hundred and is coming off a fresh 62 in the last game against Melbourne Renegades Women. Mignon du Preez (345 runs in 11 matches) and captain Elyse Villani (231 runs in 11 matches) have been their other consistent stars.
However, barring the top-order, the middle and lower order hasn't contributed much to the team this season which has led to their downfall. The likes of Annabel Sutherland and Erin Osborne were expected to do more.
What has been their biggest failure this season, however, has been the bowling. Only one bowler from Melbourne Stars Women - Alana King - has picked up 10 wickets this season. And even she hasn't been consistent - King conceded 0-44 in the last match. The others like Erin Osborne, Nicola Hancock, Holly Ferling and Annabel Sutherland have been poor. The bowling unit has consistently leaked runs and has been unable to pick up wickets. This has hurt the team badly and will likely be a detrimental factor in the game against Sydney Thunder.

This will be the first match of WBBL 2019-20 played at the Manuka Oval, Canberra. It remains to be seen how the pitch behaves. The pitch will not be a belter but the ball should come on nicely to the bat nicely. If the team batting first achieves a total of around 145-155, it could be a match-winning one. There have been some rains in Canberra in the last two days. However, the weather for the match is expected to be clear and windy.
While there has been only one T20I played at the Manuka Oval, Canberra, there have been quite a few ODIs played here. The venue has produced some high totals in the ODIs played here with South Africa's 411-4 against Ireland being the biggest total followed by Australia's 378-5 against New Zealand. The Sydney Thunder Women vs Melbourne Stars Women match could hence turn out to be a high-scoring game.
There has just been one international T20I match played at the Manuka Oval, Canberra - between Australia and Pakistan in November 2019. Australia had comfortably chased down Pakistan's total of 150. It does give an indication that the team winning the toss is likely to bowl first as the pitch should remain true throughout and will be good for chasing.
While Sydney Thunder Women hasn't had the best season, they have certainly been better as an all-round side than Melbourne Stars Women. Sydney Thunder's batting hasn't been consistent but their bowling has a good variety and should be good enough to stop Melbourne Stars.
The only way Melbourne Stars Women can win this match is if their strong batting unit puts up its best performance. However, their weak bowling will be an issue and Sydney Thunder should capitalize on it. The home advantage will also favor the Sydney Thunder Women and unless they really mess it up again they should finally break their losing streak against a team they have enjoyed great success. But even a victory might not be enough for The Thunders to progress to the semis.
