Thanks to the playoffs format, Barbados Tridents have got one more chance to make it to the final of CPL 2019, after facing the defeat in the first Qualifier against Guyana Amazon Warriors. The CPL 2015 finalists, BT and TKR, are now going lock horns in the second qualifier. In 2015 final held at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, the Knight Riders had lifted their maiden trophy after defeating then-defending-champions Barbados Tridents by 20 runs (TKR 178/5, BT 158/4 in 20 overs).
This season, BT comfortably defeated TKR in their previous two encounters. While TKR lost by 63 runs at Bridgetown, it was 7 wickets loss at Port of Spain. BT won three of their last five games while TKR lost four of their last five games.

After four consecutive wins at the beginning of the tournament, TKR faced five losses in their next six games, while one match against St Lucia Zouks got washed out. Their string of losses was finally cut in the eliminator match played at Providence, and now they are one match away from appearing for their fourth CPL final. Before the eliminator game, TKR lost twice to spotless Amazon Warriors and Barbados Tridents. The team which crossed 200 twice in the tournament has been lacking solid partnerships in the middle order in past few games. Out of the two matches against Barbados, TKR did not cross 140 even once.
TKR’s decision the field first in the eliminator against STKNP proved fruitful for as the bowlers successfully restricted the opponents to 125. It was the outcome of the collective skillful bowling by Chris Jordan (3 for 30), Narine (2 for 10) and Ali Khan (2 for 22). Simmons’ fifth half-century in the tournament kept TKR’s run-chase on track despite losing Narine, Munro and Bravo before the end of the powerplay. Ramdin’s stable 32 runs and Pollard’s typical innings (9 balls 26) ensured TKR’s ticket to the Second Qualifier to play against Barbados Tridents at Brian Lara Stadium.
Can they be third time lucky against BT?
Playing playoffs after 3 years, Barbados Tridents lost their first chance to secure a berth in the final, as Amazon Warriors defeated the Tridents in the first Qualifier by 30 runs. Fielding first, the Tridents bowlers conceded too many runs as they had no answer to Brandon King's dazzling innings.
All the bowlers conceded more than 8 runs per over while four of them had 10 plus economy rate. Even the tournament’s top bowler Walsh’s 2 wickets came at the expense of 42 runs. Alex Hales had provided a good start at the opening, smashing 3 sixes and 2 fours for his 19 balls 36. While Shakib, Hope and Duminy fell without making a significant contribution, BT had lost the plot by the 15th over. Though brilliant innings from Jonathan Carter (49 off 29 balls) and Holder (29 off 15 balls) at lower order reduced the defeat margin, BT never looked in control while chasing the enormous total of 218.
BT has a psychological advantage after defeating TKR twice during the group-stage matches.
At home, JP Duminy’ (20-balls-65) and Walsh (5 for 19) were the star performers. At Port of Spain, Harry Gurney (2 for 14) and Johnson Charles (half-century) led the team to a comprehensive win. However, this is going to be a different ball game to play against three times CPL champions at Trinidad in the second qualifier.
On the match day, partly sunny and pleasant weather is expected. The daytime temperature is going to reach 22 °c and the temperature is going to dip to 13 °c at night. There are no chances of rain as per the weather report.
The venue for this match is Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad. On this ground, 6 CPL games have been played so far, and four of them were won by the teams batting second, while twice the team batting first has won. Among CPL matches, the highest total batting first here is 168, which is also the highest chased total. Overall, the pitch looks good for batting and chasing seems viable.
It is recommended to bowl first after winning the toss.
It's a do-or-die game for both the teams. The Tridents have got the second chance after losing to Guyana Amazon Warriors in the first Qualifier, while Trinbago Knight Riders enter this game after the win against STKNP in the eliminator. Though TKR lost their previous two games to BT, overall head to head winning percentages of TKR is 57 % and for BT it is 43%. TKR has won their previous four games played at Brian Lara Stadium, including finals of CPL 2017 and 2018.
It’s not an easy prediction in favor of one of the contenders, however looking at all the factors and figures, our prediction is that Trinbago Knight Riders would eventually make it to the final of CPL 2019 defeating Barbados Tridents.
