Match Preview

The World Test Championship could not have started in a more contrasting fashion for both the teams. The Indian team showed up with a commanding performance in all facets of the game completely dominating the West Indies. The batting had contributions from everyone and was able to post competitive scores and the bowling was immaculate, destroying the Windies batting in the second innings. There were impressive performances from the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah.

The West Indies, on the other hand, had a disastrous start to the test championship. Even though they picked up early wickets in the first innings, they were unable to prevent the Indian middle order to conjure a decent total. From then on it was catching up and ended in an embarrassing batting performance in the last innings. They will be looking to turn it around in the second game of the series.

Teams Preview

West Indies

The West Indies will be disappointed by their performance in the first match of the series. Except for the opening burst from Roach in the first innings, they were always chasing the game after allowing India to get away to a decent total in the first innings. Their batsmen struggled against the sustained aggression and consistency from the Indian bowlers and succumbed to low scores. The team will be hoping for an improved show from their batsmen if they are to provide solid resistance to a rampaging Indian team.

The team management looks like they are going to show faith in the batting order and retain the same lineup for this test. Miguel Cummins will go out either for the fit Keemo Paul or the exciting allrounder Rahkeem Cornwall in the bowling department. The batsmen will have to bat long and big to ensure they put up enough runs on the board, that the bowlers have a fighting chance of delivering a favorable result. The likes of Kraigg Brathwaite, Shai Hope, Darren Bravo and Shimron Hetmyer need to take up responsibility on themselves and ensure the team reaches a formidable total. The bowlers need to be a lot more ruthless as they let India off the hook in the first innings.

West Indies Actual Playing XI:

Kemar Roach, Darren Bravo, Jason Holder, John Campbell, Shimron Hetmyer, Shannon Gabriel, Roston Chase, Rahkeem Cornwall, Jahmar Hamilton, Shamarh Brooks, Kraigg Brathwaite

India

India couldn’t have hoped for a better start to the series than the one they had in the first game. The openers failed but the middle and lower order were able to stitch crucial partnerships to take them to a decent total in the first innings. Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari starred with the bat in the second innings to set up an improbable total for the West Indies to the chase. The bowling was consistent and incisive, never letting the batsmen getaway and was capped by a brilliant spell by the ever-improving Jasprith Bumrah in the second innings. Ishant Sharma bowled tirelessly in the first innings to pick up a five-wicket haul and give India the crucial lead going into the second innings.

The Indians will not look to change the winning combination although it might depend on the pitch conditions. If the pitch looks like it will assist spin, a seamer might be replaced for one of Ravichandran Ashwin or Kuldeep Yadav. Other than that, they will be hoping for the opening partnership of Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul to get some more runs under their kitty before a grueling schedule till the end of the year. Cheteshwar Pujara will look for some runs while captain Kohli will be looking to convert starts into a big score. The bowlers will look to replicate the feat from the previous game and make this a clean sweep.

India Actual Playing XI:

Pitch And Weather Conditions

The pitch at Sabina Park usually assists the faster bowlers and we can expect more of the same. The fast bowlers from both sides will be licking their lips with anticipation to have a go on this surface. This promises to be a low scoring thriller with hard work for the batsmen as they get set on a seamer-friendly wicket. If there is no interruption due to rain, the match will have a decisive winner.

VENUE

The Sabina Park is a stadium which is known for producing results with 6 of the last 7 games ending in a result. The last game at this ground ended with 3 out of 4 innings below 200. So going by history, this is a result-oriented wicket with bowlers enjoying the upper hand. There should be a significant crowd over the weekend lending the typical calypso flavor to the games.

Toss Prediction

What the winning captain decides to do on winning the toss is solely dependent on the nature of the pitch. Virat, in general, prefers to bat first unless the pitch is extremely green or damp. So, we can expect India batting first on winning the toss while the West Indies will prefer to bowl first if there’s even a slight help for the faster bowlers.

Winning Prediction

Team India arrive at this game 1-0 up and will be looking to make it a clean sweep. The batting looks in good shape with most of the batsmen getting runs in the previous encounter. The bowlers completely dominated the West Indian batsmen and delivered a comprehensive victory. The West Indies will be looking for answers after the thrashing in the previous contest and will hope their batsmen put up runs on the board. The bowlers have been steady but have lacked the killer punch to knock India down completely.

The current form and the impressive bowling attack make India the clear favorites to win this test match and take the series 2-0.
